  2. Drama • The characteristics of a Drama • A story written to be performed by actors • Action through dialogue

  3. Structure • Tells you who is talking; also describes each movement of each character • Ex. Tituba, already taking a step backward: My betty be hearty soon? Parris: Out of here! From The Crucible by Arthur Miller

  4. Categories • Comedy • Tragedy • History play • Melodrama • Tragicomedy • Modern realistic drama • Political drama

  5. Comedy • Comedy is a play that has a happy ending. Comedies often show ordinary characters in conflict with society • Ex. • “ Right Ho, Jeeves” by P.G Wodehouse (1934)

  6. Tragedy • Tragedy is a play that shows the downfall or death of the main character, or tragic hero. • Ex. • Romeo and Juliet

  7. Historical Play • Historical play are based on events of the past • Ex. • The Crucible by Arthur Miller

  8. Melodrama • A melodrama contains stereotypes characters and exaggerated conflicts • Ex. • Bentley, Eric. The Life of the Drama. New York: Atheneum, 1964. • - Bentley’s classic text contains a great deal of help to students of melodrama, not least his defense of types and archetypes (in characterization) and his assertion that melodrama “is drama in its elemental form; it is the quintessence of drama”
