Comedy • Comedy is a play that has a happy ending. Comedies often show ordinary characters in conflict with society • Ex. • “ Right Ho, Jeeves” by P.G Wodehouse (1934)
Tragedy • Tragedy is a play that shows the downfall or death of the main character, or tragic hero. • Ex. • Romeo and Juliet
Historical Play • Historical play are based on events of the past • Ex. • The Crucible by Arthur Miller
Melodrama • A melodrama contains stereotypes characters and exaggerated conflicts • Ex. • Bentley, Eric. The Life of the Drama. New York: Atheneum, 1964. • - Bentley’s classic text contains a great deal of help to students of melodrama, not least his defense of types and archetypes (in characterization) and his assertion that melodrama “is drama in its elemental form; it is the quintessence of drama”
