Transcendentalists and spiritual context: • Unitarians began to criticize & analyze the Bible • New questions about the old assumptions of religion • Age of Enlightenment • experimentation and logical thinking • rational explanations of the natural world • These new rational conclusions were not spiritually fulfilling
