Lesson 7b – Genesis 3; Moses 4 The Fall of Adam
Why act it out? • The story feels scripted because it is. • God was not reacting to the situation, He was fulfilling his plan. • Most of the players knew what was going on. • What about Satan? • v6 – “he knew not the mind of God” • Satan is part of the plan and we should recognize him as such, face him head on.
Symbolism in the Story • How literal do we take the story? • Whether or not there was an actual serpent, why was the symbol used? • Snake captures prey “subtly” (v5) • Snakes use poison, destroy from the inside
Symbolism in the Story And the “Forbidden Fruit”? “What the real meaning is of the expression forbidden fruit has not been revealed, and it is profitless to speculate. It is sufficient for us to know that Adam and Eve broke the law which would have permitted them to continue as immortal beings, or in other words they complied with the law which enabled them to become mortal beings, and this course of conduct is termed eating the forbidden fruit.” - Bruce R. McConkie
Half truths of Satan (v10-11) • What is the truth in Satan’s argument? “your eyes shall be opened… ye shall be as gods” • What is the lie? “ye shall not surely die” • Satan’s tactics are often mixed truths and lies. What other examples can you think of?
“the woman saw that the tree was good” (v12) “It was Eve who first transgressed the limits of Eden in order to initiate the conditions of mortality. Her act, whatever its nature, was formally a transgression but eternally a glorious necessity to open the doorway toward eternal life. Adam showed his wisdom by doing the same. And thus Eve and ‘Adam fell that men might be’ [2 Nephi 2:25]. Some Christians condemn Eve for her act, concluding that she and her daughters are somehow flawed by it. Not the Latter-day Saints! Informed by revelation, we celebrate Eve’s act and honor her wisdom and courage in the great episode, called the Fall.” -Dallin H. Oaks
More questions and symbols • v17 – God knew what had happened, he knows all things. Why did He ask Adam? • Why talk about “nakedness” so much? • v21 – What is “enmity”? ETB: “Enmity means ‘hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition’” • Who is the seed of the woman? • v22 – What does “rule” mean? SWK: ““I have a question about the word rule. It gives the wrong impression. I would prefer to use the word preside because that’s what he does. A righteous husband presides over his wife and family” • v31 – What is “cherubim and a flaming sword”?
