  2. Composition • Refers to the placement of elements on the picture plane. Some artists do this by instinct, others plan thoroughly, but every element should be placed for a reason. • Every ingredient – size, tone, texture, form, spacing, colour, etc. affects our understanding of an artwork.

  3. Tips to Create Great Compositions

  4. Tip #1: Fill the Picture Plane(Note the Picture Plane is your drawing/painting surface)

  6. Tip #2:Choose and interesting subject matter to draw.

  7. One way to help find interesting images is to look at things differently by using a view finder. A view finder simply frames images so interesting compositions can be discovered.

  8. View finders can be simply made with cardboard or paper.

  9. Tip #3 Have objects go off the page in at least two or three places.

  12. Tip #4: Use repetition. Repeat colours, lines, shapes, and tones so your eye stays on the page longer and interest is generated.

  13. Tip #5 Change the horizon. Choose an unusual viewpoint. Look Up! Look Down! Look close or far! Be different. Do the unexpected!

  14. Tip #6 – Use the Rule of Thirds

  15. The rule of thirds tells us not to place the centre of interest in the middle of the page. Instead divide the page into thirds. Natural focal points occur where the lines of thirds intersect.

  16. Tip #7 – Use a variety of lights and darks

  17. Artwork will be more interesting if you have a pattern of different values within it. • If you are not sure if you have enough variety of value, squint at your work. You should be able to detect a pattern of lights and darks.

  18. Draw great compositions. Remember to use these tips: • Use the entire picture plane • Choose interesting subject matter • Have the subject go off the page • Use repetition • Choose an unusual viewpoint • Use the rule of thirds • Have a variety of lights and darks

  19. Some ways to test your work… • Does it still look good when you turn it upside or sideways? • Look at it from different distances. Have someone hold it farther away. • Do the squint test. Does your work have a pattern of lights and darks when you squint at it?

  20. Don’t forget that it is okay to break the rules too! Some of the best artworks break one or all of theses rules!!
