Due Today: Synthesis Paragraph Monday, September 24, 2012 Walk-IN: Turn in your critical lens synthesis paragraph and sit in your book club group that you formed on Friday, and turn to a new sheet of paper and title it Discussion Art in Life and Book Club. Learning Objective: • Students will form purposeful generalizations and draw sound conclusions about an artists message and intentions based on the overall composition and the specific details in a piece of art. Agenda: • Discussing and Interpreting Art Homework: Read for 20 minutes and complete a reading response: Week 4 due Blockday Bring your Book Club Book to class on Monday
Discussing Art in Life and in Book Club • First Viewing: list what you observe and notice • Start with the big picture • Focus in on the details • Connect back to the big picture/whole composition • Focus in on the details • Write down what you notice (specific details) on their chart—column one • Share and discuss the specific details and how this connects with the overall composition (format, style….) of the work of art. • Second viewing: write down questions related to what they wonder about in the artwork • Share your questions with the group and discuss possible answers based on the specific details in the artwork • Third viewing: write down general topics the artwork seems to be dealing with. • Share and discuss your topics with the group. Based on the overall composition and details in the piece of art what might be the artists message? • Reflection: write a paragraph • Assert a theme statement in the topic sentence (what is the author saying about the topic?) • Provide additional sentences that support the theme statement with evidence • …analysis (how does the detail prove the theme statement) • End with concluding sentence that reasserts the theme statement without merely repeating.
Tuesday, September 25, 2012 Due Today: Walk-IN: Pick up a white binder, sit in your Book Club Group and create a What Makes or Breaks a Family section in your notebook. Learning Objective: • Students will understand that note-taking is a scaffold for summarizing and synthesizing information; readers must work to determine important information, connect & clarify ideas, and gather textual evidence to form purposeful generalizations and draw sound conclusions. Agenda: • What Makes or Breaks a Family? Homework: Read for 20 minutes and complete a reading response: Week 4 due Blockday Book Club Book in class on Friday
