  3. WHY • Environment Act 1995; a duty to review and assess air quality across the district • 7 key pollutants – health based objectives • Concerns at Bridgtown; nitrogen dioxide associated with traffic emissions • AQMA declared in June 2006, effective July 2006

  4. WHERE • Residential properties on A5 between rail bridge at Churchbridge and Walkmill Lane traffic lights • A5 between Churchbridge and district boundary at Longford • A460 between Longford Island and district boundary at Wedges Mills

  5. WHAT IS HAPPENING • South Staffs DC`s declared and proposed AQMAs • Joint Steering Group with South Staffs DC • A5 trunk /de-trunking issues • M6 Toll issues • Radical ideas discussed • Deliverable ideas pursued

  6. WHO WE ARE WORKING WITH -1 • South Staffs DC • Highways Agency • Staffs County Council Highways Dept ; planning and strategy • CCDC Planning ; local plans and development control • Consultants for Highways Agency

  7. WHO WE ARE WORKING WITH -2 • MEL • Local businesses and developers • Road hauliers associations • Public

  8. WHEN ACTION PLAN IS TO BE PRODUCED • Further Review & Assessment needs Defra approval • Draft Plan must be consultated on and comments taken into account and adopted by Council • Likely to be June 2008

  9. WHAT HAPPENS THEN • Monitoring of pollutants will continue • Monitoring of agreed actions • Effectiveness of actions assessed • Partners will review Action Plan • Duty is to produce an Action Plan, no sanction on Council if not delivered by partners
