The Period. Rule. • Use a period at the end of a complete sentence that makes a statement. • Use a period after an indirect question. Example. • I know you did your homework in the car. • She asked where her spelling book was.
The Comma. Rule. • Use commas to separate words and word groups with a series of three or more. • Use a comma to separate two adjectives when the word and can be inserted between them. • Use commas before or surrounding the name or title of a person directly addressed. Example. • Don’t forget to buy pencils, erasers, and markers for school. • They are understanding, caring parents when it comes to their children. • Will you, Julian, be my partner for the report?
The Exclamation Point. Rule. • Use the exclamation point to show emphasis or surprise. Example. • I am shocked by the student’s behavior!
The Question Mark. Rule. • Use a question mark only after a direct question. • Use a question mark when a sentence is half statement and half question. Example. • Will you study at the library with me? • You don’t care if you pass the class, do you?
