Todays Lesson • For todays lesson, we will complete the following: • Information on First Unit • MYP Marking Activity • Introduction to Magnets • Magnets Activity
Magnets, Forces & Simple Machines • How long is our first unit? • 10 weeks • What assessment tasks will we have? • Scientific Essay • Design Task (DYO Experiment) • Unit Test • Processing Data Activity (time dependant)
Continued • What are our main concepts (ideas) that we will cover? • Be able to explain magnetic fields, domains and electromagnets • Be able to explain different forces being exerted on an object • Explain the three different Newton Laws, giving examples of where it occurs around them • Explain how friction is important for movement and other things (creating heat etc) • Describe how simple machines function, including to give real world examples
General Housekeeping • For most units, people will be learning different things because of the science essay and design task • All students will learn the main concepts needed for the unit test. • If the class wants it, I will write a practice test that we can complete in class. • The class will get 5 periods for the Science Essay and 6-8 periods for the Design Task
MYP Marking Activity • Go to the following website: http://yisgrade6.wikispaces.com • Then go here 8B Science MYP PDF File • We will get into 6 groups. Each group will write down the main points (Dot Points only) on what is needed to get a Level 5/6 mark for Grade 3 (Grade 8) • After 10-15 minutes, we will go through our findings as a class.
Properties of Magnets • The three metals which are magnetic are Iron, Nickel and Cobalt. • Magnets attract the three magnetic metals and materials that contain these metals. • In addition, one part of a magnet will always point north when allowed to swing freely. http://hackaday.com/2010/10/31/large-magnets-spark-on-halloween-who-knew/
Magnetic Poles • There are 2 magnetic poles (North & South). • Magnetic poles which are opposite attract each other. • Magnetic poles which are the same will repel (push away) each other http://www.swe.org/iac/images/NewMagnet.jpg
Magnetic Fields • The magnetic field is the strongest at the poles. • Magnetic field lines spread out from one pole, curve around the magnet, and return to the other pole. • All field lines will meet up with the opposite pole it came from. http://www.magnetic-shield.com/faq/interference.html
Magnets Activity • Download the Magnetics Activity Word Doc from the Wiki. • Answer the questions and save them on your MAC. • Don’t forget to make a folder called: Grade 8 Science and make another folder called Magnets & Forces!!
