Whether your interest is history and politics, the arts, religion, ancient ruins and gilded palaces, or modern-day commerce, you can expect unique and inspiring encounters on this journey, for a price you would never be able to match on any other 3-4 week tour. Who should go? • Any NMU student, in any major or minor • Community members and students at other universities who register and pay the NMU tuition and International Program fees • Anyone desiring to travel and see the world • Anyone desiring to make new friends and directly experience another culture • Anyone willing to act responsibly as an ambassador for your nation and NMU
What do I need? • Complete easy application form for Study Abroad • Have valid (through 2013) passport. (No passport? Contact International Programs at 227-2510 to help you get one) • Pack hot weather clothing, practical footgear • Update immunizations: MMR, DPT, Hep A/B, Typhoid • Keep clothing modest for visits to temples and royal sites • Smile!
What will it cost? • Registering for 12-18 total credit hours in Winter 2013 gets NMU flat rate tuition • Financial Aid packages can be applied • Estimated International Program Fee: $3,800 (Thailand), $1,200 (Cambodia), includes round trip transportation, housing, excursions, and many meals! • Pocket money: $500 or more (Southeast Asia is really inexpensive)
Where will we go? • A week in and around Bangkok • A week in and around Chiang Mai • A week on Phuket Island • An optional week at Angkor Wat with a rural village stay in Cambodia

Week 1 • Thu. May 9 Departure • Fri. 10 Arrival in Bangkok (circa 11:45 PM) • Sat. 11 Orientation class at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University: Thai history and government Visit Jim Thompson’s House; Siam Square shopping • Sun. 12 Chatujak Weekend Market; Free afternoon • Mon. 13 Royal City Grand Palace compound and temples; Thai National Museum; Evening Chaophraya dinner cruise • Tue. 14 • Wed. 15 Orientation class at Bangkok Thonburi University: Thai culture & economy; • Visit Phranakhon Rajabhat University: Music, Dance, Muaythai; Khao San Road shops and ros Bus tour: Damnoan Saduak floating market and Rose Garden cultural shows
Week 2 • Sun. May 20 Bus tour: Bang Pa-In royal palace and Ayutthaya • Mon. 21 Free day in Bangkok! • Tue. 22 AM Flight to Chiang Mai Tour city and visit mountaintop Wat Doi Suthep Northern-style Khantoke dinner • Wed. 23 Thai cooking and music classes • Thu. 24 Visit Home industries along San Khamphaeng Road: pottery, silk, silver, painted umbrellas Service project: teaching English at primary school • Fri. 25 Hill tribe village excursion • Sat. 26 Elephant camp and bamboo rafting
Week 3 • Sun. May 27 Wow – free day in Chiang Mai! • Mon. 28 Bus tour: Doi Inthanon National Park • Tue. 29 Flight to Phuket; Tour Phuket town, settle in at beach hotel • Wed. 30 Phangnga Bay tour, or Kaew Phra Taew rainforest, Gibbon Rehabilitation Center • Thu. 31 Thalang National Museum, Marine Research Center, sunset at Cape Promthep • Fri. June 1 Free beach day • Sat. 2 Free beach day
Week 4 • Sun. June 3 Free morning; PM flight to Bangkok airport • Mon. 4 Early AM Departure for USA for 3 cr. students AM Departure to Siem Riep, Cambodia for 4 cr. students; Orientation session • Tue. 5 Silk farm; Home stay in Banteay Chhmar • Wed. 6 Explore temple ruins and rural village life • Thu. 7 Lesser known Angkor Wat temples • Fri. 8 Tonle Sap floating village, bird sanctuary • Sat. 9 Major Angkor Wat temples; return flight • Sun. 10 Early AM departure for USA via Bangkok
How will I get to go? • Fill out a 2013 FLSA Application, available online at http://webb.nmu.edu/InternationalPrograms/SiteSections/StudyAbroad/FacultyLed/FacultyLedStudyAbroad.shtml • Register for Winter 2013 (even though travel is in May-June) • Enroll in 3-4 cr. EN 495/595 or EN 495W/595W (for writers) or 3 cr. PS 495: Study Abroad – SE Asia • Pay required tuition and fees (3 installments beginning February) by the deadlines • Attend required preparation sessions in late March and April, after Spring Break
What assignments are required? • 8 hours classroom preparation and assigned reading in late March and April • Journal during trip, every day • Writing project (10 pages minimum) for grade, as defined by course instructor • Additional paper for Cambodia, if you elect to go • Due date for writing project(s): End of Summer Session 1 • Audit option (no required paper) available for college graduates and community members
