  4. The Op-Ed: Summary Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • The current global economic crisis is self-feeding • Globalization ties economies and sectors in a net • Eastern Europe’s transition places it in extreme weakness • Not self-sufficient, heavily reliant on foreign capital • Western Europe in danger • Defaulting loans from failing/ed states • Pursuing Protectionist policies • EU not responding • Economic partnership should help member states • Debt forgiveness the only answer? • Save Eastern Europe -> global stabilization?

  5. Which Objective? Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • Most closely fulfills: More sophisticated writing process that results in a clear, effective, well edited, public piece. • Subject to Peer review • Extensive research required • Open choice assignment: regarding whatever topic we wished. • How? • Revise clarity, sentence structure, idea flow, and succinctness. • Four drafts • Online and Scholarly articles from previous six months • Integrity? Accuracy? • Search for personal topic of relevance • Purely self-created

  6. Writing Process Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • Topic choice • No guidelines – choose: what is interesting? • Economic recession, foreign events, something I know little about • Peer Input • Rely heavily on “fresh eyes” • Readers find confusion • Editing • Paragraph by paragraph breakdown • Edit for tangents, then flow, then sentence structure, then grammar/spelling • Re-peer edit and revise • Submit

  7. Why a strong piece? Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • Straightforwardness • No extraneous or peripheral explanations that often lead to tangents • Well supported by research • Focused • Position clearly stated and focused throughout the piece • Written in personal manner • Concise, keeping a well-flowing dialogue, and providing as much informative persuasion as possible • Clear voice

  8. Challenges Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • The biggest: my own creations. • Unable to focus for a long time • I am not very keen on the writing process and find it too repetitive and concerned with minutia. • Tendency to loop my thoughts. • This creates repetitive sentence structure and mind-numbing word choice • Dislike to edit/revise my own creations • Since writing is deeply personal, editing and revising means I am editing and revising myself

  9. What I learned… Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • About my topic: • The current economic crisis as relates to globalization and systemic risk. • What seems inconsequential – reconstruction of Eastern Europe from Communism to Capitalism – sends shock waves through the rest of the world. • About writing: • I found that editing is simply a means to an end: creating better writings. • An essay is not a collection of the first things that come to mind, it is a well-tended and directed growth of an idea towards a conclusion.

  10. Peruse Title Slide A little about me… My Project: Format Op-Ed Summary Which Objective? Writing Process Why a strong piece? Challenges What I learned… Peruse • Feel free to peruse my project • 1st sec: Background research paper • 2nd sec: Lit Review • 3rd sec: Op-Ed • Ask any questions! • I’m here to help… (So I am told)
