UCORE: Learn about science at the UO while getting paid. • UCORE Fellows earn $3500 for a 10-week internship program at the University of Oregon while living on the UO campus. • Fellows are paid for outreach work to students at their home community college for the following academic year.
The UCORE Summer Program • Introductory Workshop. At the beginning of the summer, UCORE Fellows attend a week-long workshop to prepare them with basic research skills necessary to have a successful summer research experience. Some of the items covered include: • Lab safety skills • Keeping a science science notebook • Using the machine and electronics shops
The UCORE Summer Program • Summer Research Experience. UCORE students are placed into research labs at the UO. • Projects available in Chemistry, Physics, and Geology labs • Fellows work a flexible 40-hour week on real research projects guided by graduate student mentors. • Fellows gain a hands-on experience in what graduate school entails and what it means to be a scientist.
Sample of 2007 Summer Research Projects: • Arsenic Coordination Chemistry & Anion P • Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) Optimization • Investigation of Cascadia Subduction Aone with Mapping of Earth Flow Displacements • Nanosphere Lithography • Synthesis of AuNp with the use of Bunte Salts • Synthesis of Azaborines • (TaSe2)x(PbSe)y Misfit Layered Compounds • Modeling Differentially Rotating Strange Quark Stars • Measuring and Manipulating Microscopic Solid and Liquid Particles
The UCORE Summer Program • Outreach/Career Workshop. An end-of-summer workshop and celebration showcases the summer work. • Fellows present a poster and PowerPoint presentation detailing their summer research experience. • Fellows receive career counseling, information on college transfer and higher education options, and • Fellows are trained for the mentoring and outreach that they will be expected to take on during the upcoming year

Academic Year Outreach • Students are paid $10/hour for ~ 10/week for a variety of outreach projects, including: • Tutoring • Presentations, events • Science Club activities
