Statistics for CVD in Australia • Affects estimated 19% Australians (3.7 million)1 • Approx. 6.9% (1.4 million) Australians have a disability associated with CVD • Leading cause of death:2 • Over 1/3 (34%) of all deaths in 2006 • 132 deaths everyday or 1 death every 11 minutes • More women than men die from CVD / year • 22,757 men die from CVD / year • 24,500 women die from CVD / year 1. Statistics for CHD in Australia • Heart disease(mainly heart attack) • Leading single cause of death (2008) • 23,600 deaths / yr (or 65 deaths / day) • 12,444 men / year and 11,221 women / year • 3.8% long term heart disease • Heart attack (or MI) • ~48,000 / year → 40% result in death • ~25% die within an hour of their first ever symptom • First time, deaths in women outnumber men (2008) 1. Heart Foundation. Key Cardiovascular Statistics. May 2010.
Statistics for CVD in Australia • Stroke • Second leading single cause of death • ~40,000 to 48,000 stroke events/yr • 11,973 deaths/yr (or 32 deaths/d) • 4,727 men / yr • 7,246 women /yr • ↓3.5% stroke deaths over 10 yrs • Blood vessel disease • 2, 314 deaths / yr • 1,227 men/ yr & 1,087 women / yr • Deaths ↓ by >20% since 1997 1. CVD & Indigenous Australians Comparative mortality & prevalence to non-Indigenous Australians
CVD in Indigenous people http://www.healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au/health-facts/overviews/selected-health-conditions/cardiovascular-disease National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) undertaken by the ABS in 2004-2005 • 12.5% reported a long-term heart or related condition • 14% of those living in remote areas • 11% of those living in non-remote areas No difference to 2001 National Health Survey (slight increase not statistically significant)
Comparison between Indigenous & Non-Indigenous Australians • 1 in 8 reported CVD condition • 1.3x as likely to have CVD • 1.5x more likely to be hypertensive • 3.1x (males) as likely to die from CVD(2001-05) • 2.6x (females) as likely to die from CVD(2001-05) • 19x as likely to die from acute rheumatic fever & chronic rheumatic heart disease1 • 26-27xprevalence of acute rheumatic fever & chronic rheumatic heart disease (M–F) (in NT & SA, Dec 06) • Significantly higher rates of some CVD risk factors3 • Heart Foundation.
