Chapter 9Discussion Strategy Judyth Amaro Melissa Amaya Isabel Santiago Karla Campos
Description Discussion strategies are instructional strategies that use teacher-student and student-student interactions as a primary vehicle for higher level learning goals. Discussion strategies are characterized by decreased focus on the teacher, increased student-student interactions, and high levels of student involvement. Purpose: Discussions stimulate thinking, challenge attitudes and beliefs, and develop interpersonal skills. Students learn different skills by being actively engaged.
Additional information and ideas: cautions, texts to use, tips for teaching, etc. • A teacher becomes less of a director of learning and more of a facilitator. The role is more difficult because the teacher has less control over the lesson’s direction and pace. The role is critical because the teacher must ensure that students are learning. The teacher must promote the learning by keeping students actively engaged. The teacher must carefully initiate, inform, support, monitor, and evaluate the discussion. The discussion must be carefully planned. The discussion must not lose its focus.
