Common Core Standards QUIZ! • The CCSS only include skills and do not address the importance of content knowledge. • The CCSS are anchored in College and Career Readiness standards. • The CCSS define how teachers should teach. • The CCSS do not include recommended literature lists. • The CCSS define what all students are expected to know and be able to do.

Common Core State Standards • The Council of Chief State School Officer and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) coordinated the state-led CCSS Initiative. • This was not federally-led (DOE or NCLB) • 44 states have adopted the CCSS

Why is This Important for Students, Teachers, and Parents? • Prepares students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and work • Ensures consistent expectations regardless of a student’s zip code • Provides educators, parents, and students with clear, focused guideposts
Criteria for the Standards • Fewer, clearer, and higher • Aligned with college and work expectations • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards • Internationally benchmarked, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society • Based on evidence and research
Common Core State Standards • Quality of the new standards • Developed by experts – they are good! • Fewer, but equally rigorous • Focus and emphasis changes, some rearranging in math
Common Core State Standards • CCSS vs. CA State Standards • States had to adopt 100% of the standards • States could add an additional 15% to the CCSS • In other words, the states had a pencil, but not an eraser
Common Core State Standards • CCSS vs. CA State Standards Cont. • Common Core replaced our existing standards in Math and ELA • CA had high standards to begin with so the change to the CCSS is more a shift of emphasis rather than any large content changes
Transitioning to Common Core State Standards • We have a plan! • Professional Development Cadre and lead teachers • Instructional Focus Meetings • Timeline with full implementation in 2014-2015 • Testing will not change until 2014-2015 • We will continue to teach our current content standards for at least three more years • We will begin to shift our emphasis in the direction of CCSS this year
Transitioning to Common Core State Standards • We will begin to shift our emphasis in the direction of CCSS this year and provide targeted Professional Development in the following areas: • ELA • Greater emphasis on analysis of informational text • Math • Eight Mathematical Practices
Testing Development • California has joined the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) • Computer adaptive assessments and performance tasks • Grades 3 – 8, high school English and math • Administered last 12 weeks of school • Optional interim assessments http://www.k12.wa.us/SMARTER/Resources.aspx
CA State Implementation • The new assessments scheduled for 2014-15 • Supplemental materials available summer 2012 • If legislation passes: • Revise Frameworks - math 2013, ELA 2014 • Approve new materials - math 2016, ELA in 2018 • If legislation does not pass: • Revise Frameworks - math 2017, ELA 2018 • Approve new materials - math 2018, ELA in 2020
