The treatment and distribution of water for safe use is one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. More than 3 million children below age 5 die annually from diarrhea diseases contracted through drinking water in the developing world Definition Presence of harmful material in sufficient quantity to measurably degrade water quality.
Contaminants Microorganisms Disinfectants Disinfection Byproducts Inorganic Chemicals Organic Chemicals Radionuclides
Microorganisms Cryptosporidium+Giardia lamblia+Viruses Effect (long term exposure): Gastrointestinal illness (e.g., diarrhea, vomiting, cramps) Source :Human and animal fecal waste Total Coliforms (including fecal coliform and E. Coli) Not a health threat in itself; it is used to indicate whether other potentially harmful bacteria may be present . Coliforms are naturally present in the environment; as well as feces; fecal coliforms and E. coli only come from human and animal fecal waste.
Disinfectants Chlorine+ Chloramines Effect (long term exposure above MRDL 4mg/l): Eye/nose irritation; stomach discomfort Disinfection Byproducts Bromate+Haloacetic acids Effect(long term exposure above MCL ) : Increased risk of cancer Source: Byproduct of drinking water disinfection Radionuclides Uranium Effect(long term exposure above MCL 30ug/l): Increased risk of cancer, kidney toxicity Source: Erosion of natural deposits
Inorganic Chemicals Arsenic Effect(long term exposure above MCL .01 mg/l): Skin damage or problems with circulatory systems, and may have increased risk of getting cancer Source: Erosion of natural deposits; runoff from orchards, runoff from glass & electronics production wastes Organic Chemicals Vinyl chloride Effect(long term exposure above MCL .002 mg/l): Increased risk of cancer Source: Leaching from PVC pipes; discharge from plastic factories
DRINKING WATER STANDARDS Total coliform bacteria Must not be detectable in any 100-ml sample
