About Stanislavski • Stanislavski was born on 17th January 1863 in Moscow, Russia. He passed away on 7th August 1938. • Stan real name was Constantin Stanislavski. • He was born into one of the richest families in Russia and adopted the stage name Stan to hide his acting away from his parents. • Stanislavski was a Russian actor and theatre director, he accomplished Order of Lenin – 1937, Order of the Red Banner – 1938 and People’s Artist of the USSR - 1936 • Stanislavski treated theatre-making as a serious effort, requiring dedication, discipline and integrity. Throughout his life, he subjected his own acting to a process of strict artistic self-analysis and reflection.
Early Influences • Being increasingly interested in ‘living the part’ Stanislavski was able to maintain characterization in real life. • Disguising himself as a tramp or drunk and visiting railway station, or disguising himself as a fortune-telling gypsy. • Stanislavski then took his characterization in real life to the rest of his cast to then make a short comedy in which he performed in 1883. • In 1884, he began vocal training under Fyodor PetrovichKomissarzhevsky, with who he also explored the co-ordination of voice and body. • Together they made exercises in moving and sitting stationary “rhythmically”, which anticipated Stanislavski’s later use of physical rhythm when teaching his system to opera singers.
