Hunter-Gatherers • Hunter-Gatherers (HG) were nomads. They traveled from place to place in search of food and shelter. • Men hunted and Women gathered. • These people learned how to use tools, and control fire to deal with their natural environment.
Agriculture & Domestication • Between 8000 and 4000 B.C. people began to change how they lived. • People began to domesticate plants and animals for their own use. • What is domestication? • What benefits would domestication provide people? Think/Pair/Share
Domestication – When people learned how to tame animals. (food, milk, wool). • Agriculture – (Farming) Grow plants to eat! • What do plants need to grow? • Irrigation – Divert water from a river/lake for your plants. Drought protection!
Benefits • Domestication & Agriculture allowed people to settle into villages. No more moving! • D & A provided stability. (you know you have food for tomorrow). • Surplus – Save it or Trade it! • Does everyone in a society farm? Why or why not?
Specialization • Now that farmers and providing food for people, others can perform different tasks. • Specialization is different kinds of jobs. • People began to weave cloth, build tools and weapons from metal, mold pottery. • Is the move from Hunter-Gatherers to Farmers a good thing? Why/ Why not?
