PATH-CommCare Enabling Community Health Workers (CHWs) with Mobile Applications. Gayo Mhila, D-Tree International, Tanzania
Outline • Introduction- • Process of Developing CommCare • Implementation • Prototypes • Funs and Challenges • Conclusion
Process of Developing CommCare: Focus Group Observation Paper Prototype Build CommCare Test
Implementation of PATH Comm • Conducted a minimum of 4 focus group discussions • Three field visits -household follow-ups to observe the work flow and interaction between CHWs and household members • Two days training of CommCare for CHWs in Kisarawe • Four field training after the CommCare training • Three different versions of CommCare already deployed
The Best From The Field! There are several changes that we would have not thought without the CHWs input • TB Survey form – TB Education form • Patient to called a Client • Soft keys of CommCare to be in Swahili language • To capture Sub-village instead of a village • The flow of questions on the registration and diagnosis form
More to be done • Continue to refine the tool to make it more user friendly • Continue to change the remaining soft keys from English to Swahili • Add a review form to help user view collected data • Find out what information is ok to be submitted to the system and what should be omitted.
Challenges • Limitation of understand the existing system • Only one network coverage in the area • Charging phones in rural areas. Exploring alternatives such as solar, etc • Airtime management, personal calls • Uptake and understanding technology • Privacy and confidentiality of clients info
Conclusion • As we continue to shape & refine the mobile tool we should start thinking what do we want by the end of phase 2. • Review the indicators to determine success and failure of the project • What reports should we start prototyping from the PATH community based in preparation of the next phase if any. Thank you.
