The role of ENT • ENT serves the managers of publicly funded transport research programmes (demand side of transport research) • Provides a framework for trans-national cooperation • ENT provides knowledge support, organisational support and financial support • ENT complements Community and national research • Facilitates trans-national cooperation where national and Community research do not provide satisfying results

Action Group • Consist primarily of program managers but also of researchers/experts • Starting-point is the expression of interest for a cooperation of three or more ENT partners (variable geometry) • One country takes the lead and starts the process by drafting a position paper (background information) • A series of meetings and workshops follows • MoU (or a similar document) will be signed containing a commitment of countries for a cooperation and financing • ENT accompanies and supportsthe activities permanently (organisation, moderation, background information) • Tailored procedures needed!
Benefits for the ENT partners • Contacts to the colleagues in other European countries • Up to date information about R&D activities • in other countries • and in the EC • Exchange of best-practise information on programming and cooperation • Exchange of evaluators • Support for the development of national R&D strategies and programmes • New opportunities for national R&D – trans-national cooperation • Effects • Improved quality of R&D results • Increased efficiency of public funds
Current Status • Networks of relevant programmes, organisations and persons from 11 countries • Know-how on effective procedures and instruments • 13 running action groups • Examin cooperation opportunities on different topics • Facilitation and implementation of concrete transport related R&D cooperation • Further action groups under preparation
SURSHIP – a maritime safety initiative“It is possible to build safer ships if a joint R&D effort is taken on the improved survivability of the entire ship, in a holistic meaning. “ ENT5 • 8 Countries: SE, DE, UK, FI, NL, DK , FR, PL • SURSHIPprogram was signed on 20 June 2006 • Coordinated/Joint program2006 – 2009 • Consists of 32 research issues -estimated public funding of 8 M€ • Combines technological development and transport-policy related issues (rule making for IMO) • Action Group started the preparation phase in June 2005 and now entered the phase of concrete R&D cooperation

Demography and Transport – KEEP MOVING ENT14 • 4 Countries: SE, DE, NL, FR • Further countries expressed interest to join:AT, UK, CH • Long-term initiative • A Strategic European Research Programme on Demographic Changes and Transport (duration for 3 years) • Call 1 “Improving the Mobility of the Elderly” • Comprising approximately 3 m € • Launching date: February 2007. • Further calls envisaged in 2008 and 2009

General goals and objectives • Improve the outcome of transport research programs • Building up the service platform for trans-national cooperation of publicly funded transport research programmes • Developing the formal foundations, identifying potential themes and testing in concrete cooperation
Core activities in ENT II • The framework of ENT will be updated and extended • Involvement of further countries and regions • Cooperation activities will be intensified • Preparation of a large-scale cooperation (ERA-Net Plus) • Overcome the fragmentation of transport research in Europe • Build-up a database on national transport research programmes and relevant persons • Dissemination of national R&D results • Structured support for less-experienced countries/organisation
Partnership in ENT • ENT will offer the partnership to all countries that are represented in the Programme Committee of FP7. • ENT has started to contact the relevant organisations that owe, manage or plan to build up transport research programmes Ministries of Transport, Research, Science, Economics, Technology, Infrastructure, etc. Agencies and other programme managing organisations
