What is Learning? Learning occurs when information is transferred into the long-term memory, which can be retrieved in the future.
Strategy 1 - Retrieval Practice • This is any activity that means you have to retrieve information from your long-term memory. • From memory! No notes! • Test yourself – quizzes, flash cards, knowledge organisers, mind maps, summaries, diagrams, graphic organisers. • Then add in and correct
Quizzes • Write/use lots of questions and try to answer them • Re-cover the areas you did not recall well • Include a range of questions – multiple choice, knowledge, understanding.
Knowledge organisers • A knowledge organiser specifies in detail, the facts and knowledge that you will need to know and remember about a particular topic. • Use to self-quiz – write down as much as you can from memory
Strategy 2 - Spacing • Revisiting a topic sometime after first learning it. • Go over topics multiple times, with a gap in between • Revisit/review topics that you covered last week, last month and all the way back to the start of the course
Strategy 3 - Interleaving • It is more effective to mix subjects/topics up than go over them in blocks • Questions that ask you about lots of different topics
What can parents do to help? • Encourage your child to do reviews regularly and early! • Discuss these techniques with your child • Test your child • Review timetable and planning • Revision guides • Exam papers • Study area • Screens and phones • Wellbeing– sleep, food, activities to de-stress **Courses lists ** Information from departments
