  6. Far-Reaching Effects of the Hawaiian Islands Xie et al. Science 292, 2057-2060 (2001) A A 3,000-km-long wake, many times longer than any yet observed, was discovered lee of the Hawaiian Islands using QuikSCAT and TRMM satellite data. East of the islands, the filtered SST field varies little, to the west greatly. In the shadow of the islands is a warm tongue in the ocean that both causes the winds to converge and is the result of converging winds. The winds create an eastward counter-current (simulated by an ocean GCM in B) that generates the warm band. SST & Wind (Filtered) °C B SST & Current

Boyer, Cathy Stephens New study finds warming trend in oceans March 23, 2000Web posted at: 11:18 p.m. EST (0418 GMT) Will warmer ocean temperatures heat up the atmosphere? The team of oceanographers spent seven years compiling more than 5 million ocean temperature readings taken from 1948 to 1996 in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans.
