  4. WHAT WE DO ? • Make people aware, about why and how to become a donor. • Educate them about the process involved to become a donor. • Collect Buccal Swab sample from them with their consent. • help find a match for a patient in need.

  5. WHAT IS A DONOR REGISTRY ? • A DONOR REGISTRY is a database of individual potential donors. • There exists various donor registries across the globe but no functional Registry in India. DONATE WHAT ? • A donor is required to donate stem cells usually through peripheral blood stem cell transplant.

  6. What are stem cells ? • Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body like blood cells, muscle cells etc.. • Serve as a repair system for the body • A blood cancer patient’s stem cells are destroyed by radiation in chemotherapy and they require them from a donor to help keep him alive.

  7. Why should I donate? • 25% of patients in need of a transplant usually find a donor within their family. But, 70%of the patients usually look for a match among unrelated donors. • Your choice to become a DONOR can therefore help save a life.

  8. How do you determine if I am a ‘MATCH’ ? • When you donate your sample, we perform necessary experiments to determine your genetic information (tissue typing). • Your tissue typing is then matched with that of the patients. • A close match is required to enable a successful transplant.

  9. How do I donate stem cells ? • Peripheral blood stem cells transplant is usually performed where the stem cells from your blood stream are filtered and infused into the patient. • It’s a simple process like donating blood. • You can usually return back to your day-to-day life immediately

  10. THE NEED FOR YOU TO BE A DONOR? • The probability of finding a possible match for a stem cell transplant depends largely on factors like ethnicity, genealogy etc. • Every major donor registry across the world is in need of diverse ethnic groups to register as potential donors. • South Asians for instance have a chance of 1 in 20000 to find a possible donor.

  11. DONOR SAMPLE COLLECTION • Buccal swab sample – a cotton swab is rubbed inside your cheek. • Processing sample – it is processed in our state of the art lab at histogenetics to determine your genetic information. • Potential match – your genetic information is matched with that of the patient in need, to check for a possible match.

  12. TRANSPLANT PROCESS ONCE A POSSIBLE MATCH IS FOUND- • Educate the donor about the process • Ensure the DONOR is healthy through medical examinations. DONOR’s health is the top priority. • No OBLIGATION for the donor to go through the process if he/she is not INCLINED

  13. What next after you find my typing information? . Your HLA Type will be shared with you . You may have an opportunity to save a life . This may be helpful for your own family or friends . Currently there are many patients in India in need of a Match – Here are a few of them – . Gaurav Tandon – 34 year old – Mumbai . Venkat Ramani – 41 year old – Mumbai . Rohit Sehgal - 30 Year Old – New Delhi . Vibhasith – 3 year Old – CMC hospital . Chamood - 13 year Old – CMC hospital . IF you are a MATCH DATRI will contact you to explain the next steps

  14. RIGHT TO REFUSE ! • IF YOU ARE A POSSIBLE MATCH TO A PATIENT, YOU WILL BE CONTACTED BY THE REGISTRY AND EXPLAINED THE TRANSPLANT PROCESS THOROUGHLY. • AT ANY GIVEN POINT OF TIME, YOU ARE FREE TO WITHDRAW FROM DONATING YOUR STEM CELLS.

  15. NO COST !!! • THE COMPLETE COST OF THE TRANSPLANT PROCESS IS COVERED BY THE PATIENT’S MEDICAL INSURANCE.
