jQuery – Document Ready • An alternative to body onload. • $(document).ready(function() { • // do stuff when DOM is ready • }); • jQuery(document).ready(function($) { //do jQuery stuff when DOM is ready}); • Adding the jQuery can help prevent conflicts with other JS frameworks. • jQuery in the no-conflict mode means that $ is not the jQuery object/namespace
alternatives to $(document).ready • Use shorthand • $(function(){ • // your code here • }); • This works in exactly the same way as the standard $(document).ready function and has the added benefit of being more concise • BUT it can be harder to read • jQuery(function( $ ){ • //Insert your javascript code here • });

alternatives to $(document).ready • Use chaining • $().ready(function(){ • console.log("the document is ready") • }); • Chain a jQuery ready() function to the return value of the jQuery object: $().ready(). When the jQuery object is ready, so is the code.
alternatives to $(document).ready • Don’t use an anonymous function • $(document).ready(fooBar); • function fooBar() • { • // Your code here • } • Explicitly state the function to execute when the DOM has finished loading. • Still using the normal jquery $(document).ready syntax but the fooBar function is called instead of using an anonymous function. • The result is the same but the opening and closing brackets are less untidy.
alternatives to $(document).ready • On ‘Window’ load • There is a lesser known option that waits for the whole page to load, including images. This is in comparison to normal • $(document).ready which just waits for the DOM to load. • $(window).load(function(){ • // Your code here • }); • This obviously has its advantages if you need absolutely everything to have finished loading before your JavaScript runs. • For everyday use however you will probably run into problems where your scripts will not work until all the assets have finished loading. • This may annoy your users who will be wanting to interact with the page before it is ready.
alternatives to $(document).ready • Don’t use $(document).ready at all • There is a small performance hit in using $(document).ready so, if the code you have written does not need the DOM to have finished loading, consider not using the $(document).ready function at all. • This seems like a risky strategy however for a marginal speed improvement. • Additionally current wisdom suggests moving your JavaScript code to the end of the page, mainly for the speed improvements. • An interesting side-effect of moving your JavaScript to the end of the page is that $(document).ready is often no longer necessary. • It is important to remember that not all code can be moved to the bottom of the page, document.write calls for example are problematic.
Best option? • Unless you are completely clear about the advantages & risks of each method • Stick to using the original $(document).ready function • or • the shorthand alternative.
JQuery - multiple $(document).ready …? • Recommended that you not have more than one$(document).ready function per document • If you have more, all will get executed on a first Called, first Run basis! • Execution is top-down, sequential. • If execution sequence is important, combine them. • *Best practise: Use only one whenever possible. • You can link to multiple external javascript files that each have their own $(document).ready functions
Why do conflicts happen? • Conflicts typically happen because many JavaScript Libraries/Frameworks use the same shortcut name which is the dollar symbol $. Then if they have the same named functions the browser gets confused!
jQuery – Conflicts • Many JavaScript libraries use $ as a function or variable name, just as jQuery does. In jQuery's case, $ is just an alias for jQuery, so all functionality is available without using $. • If we need to use another JavaScript library alongside jQuery, we can return control of $ back to the other library with a call to $.noConflict(): • <script type="text/javascript" src="other_lib.js"></script> • <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.js"></script> • <script type="text/javascript"> $.noConflict(); • // Code that uses other library's $ can follow here. • </script>
