Chapter 3 THEME: Power-struggles Propaganda Tyranny • Pigs supervise the labour in the fields. • Biggest harvest • Sunday rest flag-raising ceremony planning next week’s work programme “Beasts of England” • Snowball and Napoleon disagree, struggle for power • Committees • Reduces Seven Commandments to single saying – “Four legs good, two legs bad” • Pigs take milk for their diet, “brainwork”

Chapter 4 • Animals on other farms become more rebellious. • Jones and neighbouring farms’ men launch an assault on AF • Snowball organises the defence • SB, Boxer and sheep that died receive medals for bravery. • Battle of the Cowshed • Mr Jones’ gun set against flagpole • Fired on anniversary of battle and Rebellion THEME: Use of propaganda

Chapter 5 • Mollie runs away and returns to the world of the humans (enemy) • SB wins support during meetings because of his brilliant speeches. • Napoleon and SB can’t agree on farm policies. • SB – WINDMILL • NAPOLEON – FOOD PRODUCTION • Napoleon urinates on windmill plans. • SB wins support with a brilliant speech. • Napoleon puts the nine dogs he has been training on SB, chase him off farm

Napoleon announces Sunday debates and meetings will end, only salute the flag and sing “Beasts of England”. • Special committee of pigs with him as leader make decisions. • Squealer – Napoleon is always right. • Animals file past Old Major’s skull. • Napoleon – build windmill AFTERALL!!! Actually his “idea”… THEME: Power and corruption

Rivalry between leaders - CLIMAX SNOWBALL was the enemy • Outcomes of a terrible tyrant in charge: • Stops group-planning • He and his supporters use propaganda and fear to manipulate evidence NAPOLEON becoming worse than Mr Jones Orwell’s satirical purpose: Napoleon’s takeover stands for Stalin’s ruthless rise to power in Russia.

Chapter 6 • Animals believe all the hard work is for their benefit. • “Voluntary” Sunday-work – only half food ration. • Harvest not as good. • Windmill difficulties • Boxer: “I will work harder” • Trade with neighbouring farms. • Former rules against trade, contact with humans – dogs silence protests. • Pigs move into farmhouse and sleep in beds. “No animal shall sleep in a bed WITH SHEETS.” • Half-built windmill blown down during a storm – Snowball’s fault… THEME: Use and misuse of language (“voluntary”)

  12. Misuse of the media: Squealer is a “spin doctor” Scapegoat = SNOWBALL Prevents them from comparing conditions with what they had before Keep masses busy with work and celebrations. Typical strategy of a dictator is to change history and people’s memories of the past to suite his needs.
