About the Game: • Published October 20th, 2009 by 2K Games • Developed by Gearbox Software for Xbox 360, PS3, Windows, and Mac. • Engine used : Modified Unreal Engine 3 • Action-RolePlaying & First Person Shooter (FPS)
Gameplay • Borderlands utilizes cel-shaded graphics. Graphics suite the style of the game. • Loot-driven system similar to Diablo and Fallout 3. • Purpose of game is to explore world while trying to unlock the treasures of the Vault hidden somewhere on the planet.
Leveling-Up System • Player is allowed to choose a vault hunter at the beginning of the game. • Gaining experience points allows the player to unlock skill tree abilities or and backpack weapon slots. • This implementation by Gearbox helps encourage player choice and overall is a good customization tool.
Main Characters From Left to Right: Mordecai, Lilith, Brick, and Roland
Criticism of Character Development / Plot • Main area where game is lacking • Storyline somewhat weak. Ending is somewhat disappointing. • Character development lacking. Little to no background information. • Skill tree needs additional abilities and perks. • Quest given in the game often feel tedious and monotonous.
Loot System • Uses Procedural Content Creation System. • Up to 3,500,000 weapons can be randomly generated from this system. • Weapon drops are random and correlate to rarity color going from: White, Green, Blue, Purple, and Orange • 10 Manufacturers each with special ability. • Weapons/Items can be obtained through enemy drops, quest rewards, and chests. • Main feature that increases replay value of game
Cooperative Play • Borderlands achieves social play through a Cooperative mode with up to 4 players. • System utilizes a “drop in, drop out” system. • This mode is where Borderlands really shines. • Enemies scale according to level and number of friends to balance combat. • In turn, loot rarity increases due to more players in the party.
Enemies • 3 Different Categories of Enemies: Creatures – Skag, Rakk Humans – Psycho, Bandit Guardians – Guardian Wrath • Various bosses throughout the game often require cooperative play to beat. • This encourages social play in the game.
Critique of Enemies • Enemies are randomly procedurally created. This generates a great diversity of enemies which is a positive. • However, AI controlled enemies at times feels predictable and forced. Most will just run straight at you, but some will take cover. • AI controlled enemies appropriately scale to your level and to the amount of players that are in a game.
Soundtrack/Narrative • Soundtrack in the game was very well balanced and helped convey the setting present in the game. • Narrative in the game was lacking however. Very few of your allies in the game were voiced-over. • This often creates a sense of monotony and loneliness for single-adventures. • However when spoken to, dialogue in the game was presented in a very comedic way to lower the tension. This provides a comedic relief of sort.
Pandora (World) • Personally, this is what convinced me to buy the game. • The main theme is a desert wasteland and is appropriate with the plot of the game. • However, the landscape of the world changes and presents new elements that make it unique. Often, each area is defined by the landscape that it entails and the towns located in it. • The world is massive yet is still small enough to be able to travel through it by walking or vehicle.

Conclusion • The real strength of Borderlands lies in the repeated killing of enemies with your friends in the hope to grab that one piece of loot you really want. • While, the storyline and character development are weak at times, the world that Borderlands creates immerses you completely. • Overall, I greatly enjoyed playing this game and believe this game has great replay value.
