TIS Netbook Orientation 5th Grade Netbook Program at Timpanogos Intermediate School
Terms of Netbook Loan • Signed documents and orientation meeting attendance. • Duration 1-Year • Legal title to the Netbook is with Wasatch School District. • A students right of possession and use is limited to and based on the Netbook Handbook. • Acceptable Use Agreement. • Netbooks must be returned in good condition.
Netbook Configuration and Repairs • Parents and Students are not to attempt reconfiguration or repairs to the Netbook. • Parents and Students are not to remove screws, open, or tamper with the internal components of the Netbook. • Such actions void the warranty. • Tampering will result in disciplinary action.
Agreement Violations • Intentional damage. • Violation of district policies and agreements. • Result in loss of privilege to use a Netbook.
Software and Downloads • Do not add/remove any virus protection software. • Do not download or install software. • Do not save any music, games, or programs to the Netbook, or the Home Directory File. • All software must be district provided.
Reimage of Netbooks • In the event of reconfiguration of the netbook, there will be a $15 fee.
Lost, Damaged, or Stolen Netbooks • Third party insurance is available to reduce the cost or liability in the event of loss, vandalism, or intentional damage. • In the event of loss, the parent/guardian will immediately report it to the police and provide a copy of the report to the district. • The parent/guardian shall be responsible to pay the school district for any costs associated with repair or replacement.
Third Party Insurance • The signup is found off of our school web site Wasatch School District • Cost: Between $35 - $50 with a $25 Deductable • Screen replacement is $54.25
Re-Possession • WCSD may repossess the Netbook at any time at its sole discretion for any violation of this agreement or district policies.
Modification to the Netbook Program • WCSD reserves the right to revoke or modify the Netbook program or its terms at any time.
Expectation of Privacy for Student Netbooks • Netbooks are the property of WCSD • There is no expectation of privacy on district issued Netbooks • They are not subject to the same privacy expectations as personal property
WCSD and Managing Netbook Computers • Teachers and administrators may remotely access, view and control student Netbooks • Teachers and administrators may search the computer for inappropriate use or materials at any time. • Technology staff will remotely control student Netbooks to trouble shoot technical issues • Technology staff will monitor all network traffic to trouble shoot network issues.
General Care • Students are responsible for the Netbook they receive • Netbooks in need of repair or are damaged, must be reported to their teacher.
General Care - Guidelines • Always close the lid before moving and/or transporting your Netbook • For prolonged periods of inactivity, shut down completely before closing the lid • This will help in conserving the battery • Do not overload the Netbook case • Take caution to place the netbook case on a flat surface
General Care – Guidelines Part 2 • Do not place the Netbook in the same compartment as textbooks, notebooks, binders, etc. • Never sit or place any object on the netbook case • Never carry your Netbook out of the assigned case or with the screen open • Avoid placing the Netbook on a bed, the carpet or other surface that restricts the flow of air under the Netbook. • Hard, Flat surface is best
General Care – Guidelines Part 3 • Never leave your Netbook unattended. • Never allow someone else to use your Netbook or give someone your password. • Never remove labels and identifying stickers on the Netbook or bag. • Avoid eating, drinking while using the Netbook. Keep wrappers and candy out of bag. • Take extreme caution with the screens. Excessive pressure on the screen causes damage. • Don’t pick up the Netbook by the screen.
General Care – Guidelines Part 4 • Dimming the LCD screen will save battery power. • Take care when inserting cords, cables, and other removable storage devices to avoid damage to various ports. • Do not expose your Netbook to extreme heat or cold, direct sunlight, or ultraviolet light. • Do not write, draw, place stickers/labels on your Netbook or bag.
General Care – Guidelines Last Part • Keep your Netbook away from magnetic fields i.e.: • Large Speakers • Amplifiers • Transformers • Old style television sets • DO NOT leave the power cord plugged in when placing the Netbook in its bag.
Maintaining Your Netbook • Routine maintenance will be done by WCSD Technology staff. • To include: • Browser updates • Flash updates • Adobe updates • Software updates • Etc.
What Student’s Can Do • Students are encouraged to do the following simple tasks: • Always disconnect the Netbook from the power outlet when cleaning. • Never use liquids on the Netbook screen or keyboard. • Clean the screen with a soft, lint free cloth or anti-static screen cleaning cloths. • Wash hands frequently when using the Netbook to avoid buildup on the touch pad. • Clean the touch pad with a lightly dampened cloth.
General Security • Never leave your Netbook unattended. • During after school activities, you are still expected to maintain the security of your Netbook. • Each Netbook as multiple identifying labels attached. Never remove any them. • Each Netbook will be tracked through an asset recovery system, which can locate a netbook when it is connected to the Internet.
General Use of the Netbook • Students are required to bring the Netbook to school each day with a fully charged battery. • No loaner will be provided if the battery runs out. • Students who leave their Netbooks at home will be completing their assignment using an alternative means as determined by the teacher. • Students will receive disciplinary actions for repeatedly not bringing their Netbooks to class.
General Use of the Netbook Part 2 • Avoid using your Netbook in areas which lead to damage or theft: • Sporting events/activities • Cafeteria where food is being served or consumed • Do not delete any files that you did not create or you do not recognize.
General Use of the Netbook Part 3 • Students are prohibited of playing games unless directed to by the teacher. • Chat rooms are not to be accessed unless directed by the classroom teacher. • The use of the Internet at school is a privilege, not a right. Inappropriate use may result in suspension/termination of user privileged. • Parental monitoring of Netbook use is highly recommended. • Students will have access to space on a school server on which they may save their work. • This space may also be used to back up files as directed by the teacher.
Email • WCSD manages monitors students email accounts. (username@ms.wasatch.edu) • Third party email access is not allowed within WCSD. • Always use appropriate language and content. • No private chatting during class. • There is no expectation of privacy with regard to student email accounts.
Internet Access/Filtering • As required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act: • A filtering system is in place and managed by the district. • This is a “good faith effort” to block all inappropriate content, but the district cannot guarantee that access to all inappropriate sites will be blocked. • It is the responsibility of the user and parent/guardian to follow guidelines for appropriate use of the network and the Internet.
Internet Filter Outside the District Network • A local proxy to the Internet will continue to filter content outside the WCSD network. • Internet Access while off campus: • You must have an Internet service provider. • The Netbook can be “hardwired” to a switch, hub or router using an Ethernet cable. • If you have access to an existing wireless access point, the Netbook can join your wireless network. • WCSD can not provide direct assistance in connecting your Netbook to any non-WCSD network.
Login Procedures • School Use: • Login to the WCSD network using their assigned username and password. • Home Use: • Students will be able to login using the same username and password. • Students will not be permitted to download and install any programs to their Netbook. • There will be no access to a network server on which to save files while creating them at home. • Back up of student files is the responsibility of the student. • DO not share usernames and passwords. Students are responsible for any actions using their login credentials.
Screen Savers/Backgrounds • Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver/background. • Presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language alcohol, drugs, gang-related symbols or pictures are not allowed. • Passwords on screensavers are not to be used • Hard drive passwords are forbidden.
