  3. Employer’s Definition! The LI Society for Human Resources Management has defined computer literacy for a high school student as: • A student who is capable of using the proper keyboard fingering techniques while utilizing a • word processing, • spreadsheet, • desktop publishing, • media presentation and/or • communications program(s).

  4. Let’s look more closely at this definition….

  5. Basic Keyboarding Skills • Utilizing a keyboard using the proper fingering techniques so that you can create common applications efficiently. NO hunting and pecking allowed!

  6. Word Processing(Microsoft Word)You should know how to: • Use the correct business format when creating a memo or business letter • Use proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization • Columns - Page numbering • Tables - Headers and Footers • Pictures

  7. Spreadsheet Program (Microsoft Excel) You should know how to: • Design and enter data • Create column headings, headers, footers and page numbers • Sort data • Create basic mathematical formulas • Create a graph or pie chart using data

  8. Desktop Publishing (Publisher)You should know how to: • Create a flyer • Create a brochure • Create labels • Create letterhead w/logo

  9. Media Presentations (Microsoft PowerPoint)You should know how to: • Create a professional presentation that is persuasive and informative • Choose a proper design • Choose proper graphics and media for intended audience

  10. E-Mail Communication (Microsoft Outlook)You should know how to: • Create and send e-mail communications • Attach files • Create new folders • Write action rules for filing of email • Create mail distribution lists

What more can a computer literate college student do? • All of the previous tasks listed plus: • Create forms • Create spreadsheets utilizing advanced formulas for data manipulation • Using website software, create basic web pages • Using a database program such as Microsoft Access, design a database, enter data, create inquires and design report formats
