Markham Museum and Historic Village Master Plan – Draft Final Report Presentation December 13, 2004
The Planning Process • Interpretative Planning – Concept Development • Assessment of Museum • Extensive Consultations – Internal and External • Development of Concept Options • Visioning Session • Concept Plan • Exhibition, Programme, Space, Operations, and Staffing Plans • Business Plan • Capital Costs • Attendance, Operating Revenue and Expense Projections
Key Findings: Governance • Museum is now – and should continue to be – a line department of the Town of Markham • Existing Advisory Board staffed by committed volunteers but confusion exists within Board as to proper role • Advisory Board members have little experience with fundraising
Key Findings: Visitor Experience • There is a reserve of good will toward the Museum in the Town of Markham, BUT: • Museum’s presentation of the Town’s pioneer history has limited relevance to a large and growing proportion of residents • Museum has suffered from incoherent site planning • Some buildings closed, others uninterpreted, many in disrepair • Overall visitor experience is weak
Key Findings: Collections and Market • Museum’s collections particularly strong in late 19th-early 20th century agricultural history and archival holdings – but public access to collections is limited at present • Museum operates in a crowded market context – one of several heritage villages in the area • Very few “drop-in” visitors; most arrive during one of the Museum’s special events • Museum is doing all in its power to maximize attendance and earned income in the face of ongoing staff and resource shortfalls
Museum Planning Principles • Museum must serve all of the people of Markham • Material heritage of Markham must be preserved • Revitalized Museum must be more distinctive • Master Plan must bring it to life • Reorganization of site and buildings key • Must be a focus on children and intergenerational experiences
Visioning Session: Options for Redevelopment • Option 1: Maintenance of Heritage Village as a “Heritage Programming Site” • Option 2: “Markham Heritage Adventure” Living History and Heritage Site • Option 3: Interactive Multicultural Museum
First Steps • Advisory Board should evolve into a “Friends of the Markham Museum” fundraising organization, on the model of many government-owned museum organizations (including Pickering Museum Village) • Collection management issues should be resolved
Suggested Phasing Plan • Phase 1: • A new Reception Centre (under construction) • A Heritage Carnival attraction (partially realized) • Ward Building reconstruction (collections storage centre with visible storage display) • Multicultural celebration field
Phase One Existing Conditions
New Reception Centre Reconstructed Ward Building Multicultural Celebration Field Fair Grounds Phase One
Focus on the Ward Building • Collections stored or on display in the Ward Building are showing damage due to water incursion and humidity fluctuations • Concurrent Ward Building Study shows that it will be more cost-efficient to reconstruct than repair the building.
Visible Storage Ward Building
Suggested Phasing Plan: Phase 2 • Children’s Museum in Mount Joy Schoolhouse • Renovations of selected village buildings • Rational downsizing of heritage village (deaccessioning and removal of several buildings) • Conversion of existing Strickler Barn to theatre or amphitheatre • “History at Play” area
Phase One Phase Two
Children’s Museum in Mount Joy Schoolhouse History at Play area Reorganized Heritage Village Phase Two
Suggested Phasing Plan – Phase 3 • Expansion of Reception Centre to provide enhanced public experience, collection storage, and revenue generation (rental) space • Archaeological “dig” experience near site of former Eby Pottery (near Mount Joy Schoolhouse) • Removal of Education Building to make way for parking area
Phase Three Phase Two
Expanded Reception Centre Archaeological Dig Experience New Parking Lot on Site of Education Building Phase Three
