  2. I Europe in Ruins • Blitzkrieg & Allied bombings left major cities of Europe in shambles • Survivors lived under horrible conditions • Others fled becoming displaced  different country after post war boundaries redrawn • Even after the war famine and disease spread through bombed out cities

  3. II Postwar Governments & Politics • After war, Communist Party promised change  rise in Com. Party member in Euro • Scared Europeans voted for anti-communist parties **WIL LATER EFFECT THE COLD WAR** • Nuremburg Trials= 1st time government officials were held legally responsible for war crimes • Int’l Military Tribunal heard trials

III The Effects of Defeat in Japan • Cities destroyed by Allied bombing & stripped away lands that had belonged to Japan for centuries • MacArthur in charge of US occupation • Began demilitarization= disbanding of the Japanese armed forces • Then democratization= process of creating a government elected by the people • MacArthur creates a new constitution

IV U.S. Occupation Brings Deep Changes • New constitution  emperor declares he’s not god • Now just a symbol like GB’s king • 2 house parliament = Diet • Bill of rights • Art.9 = no longer make war. Only fight if attacked • WWII changed pol. & Physical landscape • Some countries weaker & other stronger • Differences among US & SU would  Cold War
