CCMIA – Class Session #2 Tuesday, June 17th Chapter 1: Review Sections 1.1, One-Step & Two-Step Equations Sections 1.2 – 1.4
Review: Distributive Property & Combining Like Terms • Distributive Property (answers must be in standard form ax + b) a (b + c) = ab + ac Ex #1: 5 (x + 2) Ex #2) -3 (2x – 4) 5(x) + 5( 2) -3(2x) + -3(-4) Ans: 5x + 10 Ans: -6x + 12 Ex #3) -2( -4 + 3x) -2(-4) + -2(3x) 8 - 6x (Standard Form, x terms then constants) Ans: -6x + 8
Review: Distributive Property & Combining Like Terms • Combining Like Terms (Must have same variable(s) to the same power) Standard form: Variables with powers in decreasing order: ax2 + bx + c Ex #1: 5y - y Ex #2) 4x – 3 – 5x Ans: 6y 4x – 3 – 5x = 4x – 5x - 3 Ans: -x – 3 or -1x - 3 Ex #3) 4x2 – 3x + 5 – 7x – 6x2 + 9 4x2– 3x + 5 – 7x – 6x2+ 9 4x2 – 6x2– 3x – 7x + 5 + 9 Ans: -2x2 – 10x + 14
Show me you understand • Do these on a separate piece of paper to turn in.
Solving Two-Step Equations • We CANNOT divide by fractions: • We must multiply by the reciprocal

Solving Literal Equations • Solving a literal equation uses the same steps as solving an equation with one variable. You just can not simplify all the variables.
Solving Literal Equations (Solving for y or x) Steps for rewriting an equation in slope-intercept form y = mx + b *m = reduced improper fraction (NO DECIMALS)* Step 1: Add/Subtract x from each side Step 2: Divide everything by the # in front of y
