  2. Homer • A Greek poet • Iliad, the story of the siege of Troy • The Odyssey, the tale of Ulysses’ wanderings • Probably born in a Greek colony in Asia • Originally thought to have lived around 1200 BC

  3. Homer continued • Works based on common ballads and modified for his stories • Followers were called the Homeridae • All of this is supposition • Of the true Homer, nothing is positively known.

The Odyssey • Likely written between 750 and 650 B.C. • Epic Poem • Takes place after the Trojan War • Odysseus – Protagonist • Composed in Ionic Greek dialect in dactylic hexameter – you do not need to know this just a fun fact! • Most English translations use iambic pentameter • One unstressed, followed by an stressed – 5 times in a row
