    1. Efficacy of Contact Lens Disinfecting Solutions Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Staphylococcus Aureus, & Fusarium Solani Manuj Kapur, MD Charlise Gunderson, MD Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

    2. Commercial Support Disclosure Manuj Kapur does not have any financial arrangements or affiliations with any commercial organizations.

    3. Compliance with Contact Lens Care Guidelines 35 million contact lens (CL) wearers in USA 25 millions SCLs Rate of SCLs related infections inversely proportional to compliance with contact lens care guidelines, specified by soln man. Rate of compliance was 72% for new SCLs wearers Rate of compliance was 38 % for long-term SCLs wearers

    4. Non-compliance with contact lens care guidelines

    5. Minimizing Contact Lens Related Infections Patient Education ! Patient Education ! Patient Education ! Recommending the “best” contact lens disinfecting solution

    6. How do you recommend a contact lens solution? Criteria in selecting a contact lens (CL) solution: Highest disinfectivity Lowest corneal toxicity Low cost Sample availability Direct consumer advertising Media influence like reports of Fusarium contamination in CL solutions

    7. Study Design Determine which of the commercially available contact lens disinfection solutions meets the ISO 14729 guidelines of 3-log reduction during recommended soak time for bacteria, and 1-log reduction for fungi species

    8. Tested Contact Lens Solutions

    9. Materials and Methods Test Solutions Opti-Free Express with ALDOX ReNu™ Multi-Plus® 0.9% Normal saline solution

    10. Hypothesis ReNu™ Multi-Plus® and Opti-Free Express with ALDOX will meet ISO 14729 standard of 3-log reduction at their respective soak times with respect to Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Staph Aureus. However, ReNu™ Multi-Plus® will not meet ISO standards for fungi, especially Fusarium Solani.

    11. Materials and Methods Test Organisms Pseudomonas Aeruginosa ATCC 27583 Staphylococcus Aureus ATCC 29213 Fusarium Solani Test Procedure 0.1 mL of 1 X 108 CFU/mL of inoculum 9.9 mL of each test solution in glass tube Each isolate mixture sampled at 25 C for specified times of 4, 6, 9, and 24 hours 1 microliter removed and plated TSA blood agar plate Plates incubated for 24 hrs at 37 C Experiment performed as triplicate

    12. Results for Opti-Free Express 6-log reduction with ReNU & Iodine after just 4 hours. Opti-Free 3-log reduction at 4 hours.6-log reduction with ReNU & Iodine after just 4 hours. Opti-Free 3-log reduction at 4 hours.

    13. Results for ReNu™ Multi-Plus® 6-log reduction in ReNU & Iodine. 3 log reduction after 9 hours. 6-log reduction in ReNU & Iodine. 3 log reduction after 9 hours.

    14. Conclusions ReNu™ Multi-Plus® & Opti-Free with ALDOX met ISO standards of 3-log reduction for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staph aureus, and achieved a 1-log reduction for Fusarium solani. Therefore, both solutions met the ISO standards for these stand alone contact lens solutions.
