  2. Printmaking is… • Process in which an artist repeatedly transfers an original image from one prepared surface to another. • Paper is often the surface which the printed image is transferred. • Wood block printing is the oldest form of printmaking.

  3. History of Printmaking • Began as a way of communication. As early at 8th century in Japan. • 15th century printmaking began to be used as forms of art. • 19th century European artists began to produce lithographsin limited editions and to sign their prints.

  4. Printmaking Step 1 • Creating the Plate • The artist usually draws the image onto the plate first. • A printing plate is the surface on which the image is created. • Produces a mirror image. • Letters will be backwards.

  5. Printmaking Step 2 • Creating the image • Relief printing is cutting away the areas of the linoleum or wood block not meant to hold ink with a linoleum cutter. • Result, image to be printed is raised from the background.

  6. Printmaking Step 3 • Inking the Plate • Artist applies ink to the plate with a brayer. • Brayer is a roller to apply ink to the plate.

  7. Printmaking Step 4 • Transfer Image • Paper or other material is pressed against the inked plate. • Transferred by hand or press.

  8. Printmaking Step 5 • Multiple prints created are called an Edition.

  9. Numbering and Signing Each print is a single number followed by total number in the series. 2/8 is second print out of eight prints in all. Print number / number in series in LEFT corner Title in CENTER Sign name in RIGHT corner
