Chemical Reaction • A chemical Reaction is the process of changing one substance into another • A Chemical Reaction takes place because of the temperature of heat and/or energy
Chemical Equation • A chemical equation is a representation of a chemical reaction in which the reactants and products are expressed as formulas • We use them because its easier to read and can know what is happening
Balancing • Should u balance a Chemical Equation? • Yes, because the law of conservation of mass states that mass if neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction
Reactant vs. Product • During a chemical reaction the reactants change into products. • The chemical formulas on the left represent the starting substances (reactants) • The substances produced by reaction are on the right (product) • The arrow in the middle shows the reactant(s) to the product(s)
Synthesis Reaction • This reaction involves 2 or more substances that react to form a single substance • A way to visualize this is a skinny bird (reactant) and a worm (reactant) makes a fat bird (product) • Symbol form is A + B AB • Example- 8Fe + S8 8 FeS
Decomposition Reactions • In a Decomposition reaction a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances • A way to visualize or memorize this is think of an egg (reactant) at one time held a turtle has now opened (product)and egg shell (product) • Symbol form is AB A + B • Example- 2 H2O 2 H2 + O2
Single Displacement • In this reaction one element displaces another in a compound • The equation is A + BC AC + B • Example- 2Li(s) + 2H2O(l) ® H2(g) + 2LiOH(aq)
Double Displacement • The same as single displacement only with 2 compounds • The equation is AB + CD AD + CB • Example- AgNO3 + HClAgCl + HNO3
