  1. EG Contribution to NEEGRID On behalf of Estonian Grid Martti Raidal Baltic Grid

  2. Applications/Scientific Program • High Energy Physics and LHC Computing • LHC CMS experiment • LCG • Tier 2 center (together with Finland) • Solid State Physics • Quantum Chemistry • Molecular Genetics • Mathematics • Non-linear Sciences Baltic Grid

  3. Current Resources of EG EENet NICPB TUT UT Country-level GIIS EG CA Technical support group in Tallinn Technical support group in Tartu Lectures, seminars, user support Grid Laboratory Centre for HEP & comp. sciences Cluster Laboratory EAS CERN CMS software, Geant4, etc Software for nonlinear dynamics, etc DOUG software, ID-card, etc Enterprises: commercial applications Baltic Grid

  4. Current Resources of EG • EG CA accredited by the EU Grid PMA (Policy Management Authority) • 66 CPUs, currently all Intel • 8 clusters • At the end of year 2004 two more clusters will join (100 CPUs, 10 clusters) • Plan to go to the 64-bit architecture (AMD) • Needed: many more CPUs, memory and storage Baltic Grid

  5. EG Monitor Baltic Grid

  6. Network Infrastructure • Link between Tallinn and Tartu is currently 1 Gbit/s (EENet) • NICPB is using Uninet (FinNet) as the service provider • 2x622 Mbit/s link in our facilities • Infinite amount of dark fiber available • Needed: resources to make dark fiber white Baltic Grid

  7. Local Support/Matching Cost • EG writes application to the Ministry of Education and Research • Funding agencies for hardware • Participating institutions • Estonian-CERN collaboration is financed by the state, this money can be used by NICPB Baltic Grid

  8. Staff Expertise • EG is run by the Technical Support Team, each cluster has managers, we have some 15 Grid experts + users (physicists) • In 2004 we had several tutorials and regular weekly Grid seminar in UT • In 2005 we have 2 seminars in UT and TUT and a lecture series IT College • Needed: resources for education/meetings/travel and salaries for people Baltic Grid

  9. Collaborations • CERN, LHC CMS Collaboration members (mostly Nordic states), LCG • EGEE • NorduGrid (technical meeting in Tallinn in December) • Nordic Grid Neighbourhood http://www.nicpb.ee/NordicGrid/(meeting in parallel with NorduGrid technical meeting) • EU Grid PMA meeting in Tallinn, May 26-27. Baltic Grid

  10. Industrial Partners • Internet service provider Uninet • MicroLink Baltic Grid

  11. Suggestions • We should identify people to talk to • We could help Latvia and Lithuania to form first seeds of their grids • We should make an effort to avoid mistakes done by previous projects • As NICPB is going to host 2 Nordic Grid meetings in December, the NEEGRID proposal to EC could be finalized at the same time in Tallinn Baltic Grid
