  1. Introduction ABCTE Job Counseling Webinar Part 2

  2. Setting the Stage • Workshop Series Goals: • Provide relevant information to participating candidates to streamline and enhance the job search process • Session 2 goals: • Review edited resumes and cover letters • Discuss state specific hiring updates and procedures • Review next steps in job search process • Provide related “homework” for next session

  3. Recap Last Week • 1. A cover letter with lots of great content can still be passed over if the format is cluttered and messy • 2. To write a successful resume and cover letter, you need to have a cohesive and powerful personal theme • 3. Resumes and cover letters should be repetitions of each other-each has a specific purpose and place • 4. The job search process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, but diligent planning and preparation will lead to success!

  4. Resume 1: Old vs New ( Rosalie)

  5. Improvements Made: • Much better use of space • Addition of certification section • Clearer section titles and format • Better word choice • Cleaner heading • Much more powerful overall

  6. Improvements Needed: • Beware of verb tenses. If it is a past experiences, all verbs are in past tense!

  7. Resume 2: Old vs. New ( Shelley)

  8. Resume 2: Improvements Made • Better use of space overall • Inclusion of Certification section • Better word choice, quantified

  9. Resume 2: Improvements Needed • Some additional spaces within particular sections • No section break over 2 pages

  10. Cover Letter 1: Old vs New ( Rosalie)

  11. Cover Letter 1: Improvements Made • This is the original.

  12. Cover Letter 1: Improvements Needed • Too short- you need examples and reasons in your second paragraph. Think of all of your experiences and gather together the most important responsibilities, tools, and lessons you’ve learned from them. • Also put more detail into your first paragraph. There is no mention of grade level or types of certifications. • Your contact information needs to be on there somewhere. I recommend in your closing sentence in the last paragraph.

  13. Cover Letter 2: Old vs New

  14. Cover Letter 2: Improvements Made • Proper heading • More structured paragraphs-each with a specific purpose! • Great use of ABCTE information • Good, confident examples

  15. Cover Letter 2: Improvements Needed • Tie the words “highly qualified” into the first paragraph

  16. South Carolina Hiring Updates and Tips • Despite budget cut backs, many South Carolina districts are expecting open positions in critical need subject areas • When searching for positions with the CERRA Job Bank**, keep most of the search fields blank. This will allow more positions to be found, since some have odd tags. • **CERRA is the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement in South Carolina. CERRA has an online job application that every principal and district can access. There is also a Job Bank where you can search for open positions across the state. • Since the SC DOE requires more paperwork than most states, get started on your Statement of Eligibility process as soon as you are certified!
