  3. What Is A Brain Tumor? • Abnormal Growth of Cells • Cancerous (malignant) • Non-Cancerous (benign) • Directly Destroy Brain Cells

  4. What Causes Brain Tumors? • Causes Are Unknown • Possible Risk Factors • Radiation Therapy • Using Cell Phones • Inherited Conditions • Epstein Barr Virus

  5. Symptoms Of Brain Tumors • Symptoms depend on size, and location of the tumor • Most common symptoms include: • Headaches • Seizures/Convulsions • Vomiting • Problems Balancing or Walking

  6. Are Brain Tumors Inherited? • 25% of brain tumors linked to genetic risk factors • Certain inherited diseases and gene mutations linked to brain cancer • Li-Fraumeni Syndrome • Neurofibromatosis • NF1 & NF2 • Tuberous Sclerosis • TSC1 & TSC2

  7. Is Brain Cancer Culture Specific? • Does not appear to be culture specific • More frequent in two age groups • Children < 15 years of age • Adults 65+ years of age

  8. Survival Rate • Depends greatly on a variety of variables • Age • Gender • Ethnicity • Treatment

  9. Treatment Options • Surgery is usually the first treatment • Radiation Therapy kills brain tumor cells • High X-Rays • Gamma Rays • Protons • Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells • Immunotherapy stimulates the immune system
