Austria then Czechoslovakia • Hitler born in Austria- native Germans • 1938 Hitler demanded Austrian officials except annexation • Anschluss • March 1938 German forces went in • Czechoslovakia= Sudetenland German population • Czech mobilized with support of France • Daladier Prime Minister of France

  4. Sept 1938 Munich Conference • Chamberlain- G.B. Prime Minister & Daladier- France Prime Minister= appeasement • Czech had to fight alone • March 1939 total conquest • Churchill outraged

  5. Soviet Union • Communism feared • Stalin feared growing German expansion • Summer 1939 Britain and & France though about Russian alliance • August 1939 Nonaggression Pact • Back each other up • Agreed to invade Poland, each country taking a side
