  1. Lying

  2. Definition: 1.a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood. 2.something intended or serving to convey a false impression

  3. Lying is sinful. Exodus 20:16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Leteach oneof youspeak truth with his neighbor,”

  4. Why do men lie? To stay out of trouble Genesis 4:9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

  5. Why do men lie? To stay out of trouble Genesis 12:10-20 Abram in Egypt Genesis 26:1-9 Isaac in Gerar

  6. Why do men lie? To stay out of trouble Genesis 37:31-35 The lie about Joseph’s death. Genesis 39:11-15 The lie of Potiphar’s wife Matthew 26:69-75 Peter denies Christ.

  7. Why do men lie? For personal gain Deuteronomy 25:15 You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure, that your days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. Genesis 27 Rebekah and Jacob take Esau’s blessing. 1 Timothy 6:5 …useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

  8. Why do men lie? Maliciousness Matthew 26:59-62 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”

  9. Why do men lie? Maliciousness Acts 6:8-14 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 11 Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council. 13 They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”

  10. The worst lies: false doctrines John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

  11. The worst lies: false doctrines James 5:19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

  12. The worst lies: false doctrines 2 Peter 3:14-17 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked

  13. The worst lies: false doctrines Some Bible examples: • Sinning so grace may abound – Romans 6 • Keep the Law of Moses – Galatians • Celibacy and food restrictions - 1 Timothy 4:1-3 • The Day of the Lord is past - 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 • The resurrection is past - 2 Timothy 2:17-18 • Jesus hasn’t come in the flesh - 1 John 4:1-3

  14. The worst lies: false doctrines The lies don’t have to be big. Genesis 3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also not save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: now

  15. Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
