A synthesis essay requires you to use outside sources, sources that have been assigned to you. • You use these sources to support and illustrate your own ideas and to establish your own credibility.
As you write your paper, you must give credit by documenting your sources as you write. For the sources that you use from this book, you will document MLA style (Hawkins 72). • Then you will list your sources at the end of your paper on a Works Cited page.
When you write a synthesis essay, you will take a position on a particular topic based on sources you read in class or on the AP exam. • You will start with a thesis (a position) and then support your thesis by adding details and examples.
What kind of examples should I use in a synthesis essay? • An anecdote from your personal experience • Facts from several of the sources you have read • statistical information • Expert testimony (This can come from one of the sources, the news, a book you have read, a professional you know)
Page 82 • This page lists the sources from pages 75-81 and what each message is concerning community service. • Turn to page 75 and let’s take a second look at these sources.
How do I incorporate a source in my position (synthesis) essay? • Don’t summarize or paraphrase a series of texts. Cite your source or quote directly as you make your argument. Give credit as you do so. • You are in charge of the sources, not the other way around. Chose from them only those ideas that will help you make your argument.

Writing an Argument 1. Introduce your position (The thesis can come in the first sentence, or you can create a context for the thesis by using an anecdote, a provocative idea, a quotation from the prompt or one of the sources, or from your reading, or your experience.)
Support your position with appropriate evidence • Refute the opposing viewpoints • Avoid faulty reasoning • Incorporate sources • Cite the sources
Don’t rely solely on the sources. Your essay needs to be partly from your own thinking about the issue. That stands a better chance for a top score.
How do I order my reasons or evidence for my argument? Pick your best reason (evidence) and save that for last.
Where do I put my counterargument? • A counterargument is what your opposition thinks. You must acknowledge that. • Your counterargument can go near the end, or you can put it earlier. The important thing is that you include it.
Citing Sources inside the text On the AP exam, you can just put (Source A) or (Author’s last name) or (“The Title”) Or You can integrate the info into the text, as in Dean Marcy Denby argues that “the basic purpose of a university education has always been . . .”
