  1. WLM in College of Science and Engineering

  2. Ethos: implementation ANY SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF A WLM REQUIRES ACCURATE PRE-POPULATION OF DATA, AND PARTICIPATION OF THE COLLEGE IS DEPENDENT ON THIS Data: • A single master set of university data should populate the access portals (e.g. WLM, Finance, SLP, Enlighten, miniREF, T4, PDR etc) • A clear and efficient mechanism for users to highlight incorrect data, as part of annual process • Personal web pages created based on central data held Flexibility: • WLM must be fully editable in terms of roles, categories and tariffs/multipliers for adaptation by the college/schools. Access and development: • Web based system, with desktop and VPN access • User friendly interface is vital • Academic user group should consult on (and agree) on the user interface • The college wishes to approve the specification before development commences

  3. Ethos: assigning “workload” “Hours”: • For research active staff, teaching and Glasgow admin duties should not exceed 1000 “hours” • All hours are notional, reflecting that the WLM is both a measure of actual hours worked and acknowledgment /encouragement of appropriate activity Balance: • Workload should reflect admin, research and teaching contributions made by staff • Self-assigned tasks should be balanced against those assigned by university; an individual cannot opt out of school obligations Management: • WLM annually INFORMS rather than DICTATES management decisions – i.e. task assignment is agreed between individuals and HoS, most likely as part of the annual PDR process • In the majority of cases the WLM should lead to minimal change in how most successful academics spend their time Flexibility: • Subject specific weightings may be applied to different categories at the school level, as approved by the college Prior to “roll-out” the WLM MUST be piloted against cross-section of academics in all schools

  4. WLM fully integrated to other Glasgow databases T4 indiv. web page SLP PDR Single source of University held data RandE/finance Enlighten WLM -teaching - research - admin. Mini REF etc WLM may be used to highlight errors for investigation and correction by central services Web based WLM, suitable for desktop or VPN access HR

  5. Teaching Teaching Sub tot • Central data to populate WLM, giving every academic a list of • Lecture courses (inc. contact hours) • Tutorials (inc. contact hours) • Laboratory/field work (contact hours) • Academic to highlight any incorrect data • Academic to declare any additional teaching tasks not held in central data store , “hours” ratified by HoS (e.g. Hons. project supervision) • Suggested College “hours” tariff for teaching metrics shown on next slide* * harmonisation across the College is sought, but School variations are possible if a case exists Precise tariffs to be agreed and adapted after pilot testing of WLM

  6. Teaching Example Teaching Multipliers Sub tot List to be completed as superset of school/college roles administration of teaching e.g. class headships etc collected under administration Precise tariffs to be agreed and adapted after pilot testing of WLM

  7. Research Research Sub tot • Central Data to populate WLM, giving every academic a list of • Active grants (% ownership, value, investigator-recoup) • PGR Supervisions (% supervision) • PG Masters by research (% supervision) • RA management (% management) • Academic to highlight any incorrect data • Academic to declare esteem indicators (e.g. invited lectures) and external admin tasks, “hours” approved by HoS (e.g. RCUK committees) • Suggested College “hours” tariff for research metrics shown on next slide* * harmonisation across the College is sought, but School variations are possible if a case exists Precise tariffs to be agreed and adapted after pilot testing of WLM

  8. Research Example Research Multipliers“notional hours” Sub tot Precise tariffs to be agreed and adapted after pilot testing of WLM

  9. Admin. Administration Sub tot • HoC to define college specific jobs/role and “hours” tariff • Academic to highlight any incorrect data • Academic to declare any additional admin tasks undertaken for GLA, “hours” approved by HoS (e.g. College or University-wide committees) • Suggested College “hours” tariff for admin tasks metrics shown on next slide* * harmonisation across the College is sought, but School variations are possible if a case exists Precise tariffs to be agreed and adapted after pilot testing of WLM

  10. Admin. Example Administration Multipliers Sub tot List to be completed as superset of school/college roles Precise tariffs to be agreed and adapted after pilot testing of WLM

  11. Output from WLM • WLM to produce sub total for teaching research and admin to INFORM (i.e. not dictate), PDR and HoS allocation of duties • Assumption is that for research active staff, teaching and (none external) admin duties should not exceed 1000* “hours” • HoS will also take into account hours recouped under funded grants • University database to create T4 staff web pages • Including, Outputs, PGR supervision, esteem, duties, contact, photo • Single source for university held data which populates the various portals e.g. miniREF, zoning, PDR etc • Academics to highlight any errors in central data – central commitment to correct errors within 28 days * subject to reduction following efficiency improvement and increased levels of academic support WLM to output sub. totals
