  2. Porta Mosana College Our school is located in Maastricht, a city in the south of the Netherlands. In our school we have 1400 pupils.   3. In the Netherlands : lump sum system Dutch Schoolsystem Secundary School VMBO (16) HAVO (17) VWO (18) Diploma gives access to: Primary School Middle vocational education Highschool University AGE 4 12 18

  4. from age 4 to 12 Topics : general plus in many schools English and depending on the geographical situation also sometimes French or German.Foreign languages not obligatory. Overall remark : we have a lump sum system Primary School

Secondary School • Fromage 12 to 16/17/18 • 3 different levels: 4 years, 5 years, 6 years • Some subjects compulsory, others are options • Last 2 years : school examsandcentralexams We have 3 different levels of education : • VMBO : This is a more practically-orientedschooling, preparingfor jobs or formiddlevocational schools. • HAVO : It prepares for higher vocational school. • VWO : It prepares for University.

In detail - First year or first 2 years : determination year(s) At PMC : roof tile construction • Subjects : no free choice. 3 foreign languages • At the end of this period teachers decide about the level the pupils have to follow. • 3 possibilities : VMBO (total 4 years) prepares for middle vocational education HAVO (5 years) prepares for high school ( higher voc.ed.) VWO ( 6 years) prepares for university Option : bilingual stream.

  9. VWO - Third year : deepening and some new subjects. At the end of the year : pupils choose a profile (4 profiles possible) Profile : a compulsory part, a profile part and a free part. Years 4, 5 and 6 : “tweede fase” In the 5th year preparations for exams start. Exams : a schoolpart (tests composed by own teachers) and a central part ( tests made by a national panel) Level of the languages at VWO : B2

  10. At the end of year three pupils choose a profile Culture and Economy Nature and Technology Culture and Society Nature and Health A profile consists of : A general part ( sameforallprofiles ) A profile part A free part

  11. In Maastricht there are 3 schools forgeneralsecondaryeducation. Each school had topickone or twomain targets. • These targets : • Shouldcontributetoachieve the generalaims of the school and have tobeembedded in the normal curriculum of the school. At PMC we thinkthatit is very important thatourpupils have responsibilities in the creation of theirownfuture…. The main target : prepareourpupilstotheir European andglobalfuture! School shouldgivepupils the opportunitiestorealizetheir goals and offer them a maximum of possibilities in order toachievethis . Coöperation is very important.

At PMC we decided that our main targets are : -internationalization -sports The aim is alwaystoincrease European andglobalcitizenship, generalknowledge, subject-orientatedknowledge ( notjust the focus on languages ) technicalandsocial skills ( competences). It is obviousthatthisrequires a clearstructure in order toavoidunnecessaryactivities.

  13. To help us achieving this, we also have qualified teachers for : pupils with social and emotional problems remedial teaching highly intelligent pupils
