Request for Instruction • Social Work Research Methods • Fall 2009 – 26 undergraduate students • Spring 2010 – 21 graduate students The assignment: write a literature review for a research paper; find primary academic resources; find statistics to support existence of a problem. What are LibGuides? • A Web 2.0 publishing platform offered by Springshare • Librarians provide content/ Springshare provides storage Benefits: • Streamline research guides • Highlight library resources and credible websites for course topics • Incorporate visuals, media, RSS feeds, and tutorials • Provide contact info for additional help • Help patrons become power searchers • Track usage – guide, page & link level • Quick updates of contents
LibGuides as an Instructional Tool • Course-specific LibGuides • Email students one hour before class with link to LibGuide • Students use LibGuide during instructional session • Keyword exercise, then practice search strategies • Work through each page of guide • Demonstrate key sources • Review citation formats • Students asked to provide feedback on LibGuide • Revisions to guides– adding sources • Continued use of LibGuides after instructional session

Faculty Feedback This is a rather unique tool - it saves the students time in knowing where to start their research and it makes the library interface much more user friendly. Statistics are always troublesome to find, this really identifies some of the key sources they can use and is a real time-saver. The web site is an excellent source for the students. Thank you for taking the initiative and designing it for us.
