Candidate for National ChairDarryl Athos Dickerson Purdue University Biomedical Engineering 4th Year Graduate Student Greetings NSBE family! I am Darryl Dickerson, a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University. I seek to serve you as Chairperson of the society. NSBE has been a critical part of my development for the past eight years. I have served as Chapter Academic Excellence Chair, Secretary and President; as Regional PCI Chairperson; and for the past three years as National PCI Chairperson. My NSBE service has led to significant advancements at all levels. Given the honor to serve as National Chairperson, I will use these as well as a host of other experiences to institute a culture of customer service for member and chapter development through our intent focus on Service Leadership, Scholarship, Innovation and Community Impact. I look forward to inspiring, challenging, and leading the advancement of our global organization as we expose, educate, and empower members and transform our many opportunities into accomplishments.
Candidate for National ChairCrystal L. Higginbotham Michigan Tech Chemical Engineering Senior NSBE's continual growth and impact on the global community creates a need for a National Chairperson who is an influential visionary and believes that fulfilling the mission statement is what will propel our organization to new levels. In the previous years, the visionary extent of the society has only been expressed through acronymic National Directives. The society must see a need for a National Chairperson who understands that NSBE has only one mission and actually puts that one mission at the forefront of the society's endeavors. Let there be only one National Directive for 2007-2008: "To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community." Throughout my tenure as Region IV's Charter Membership Chair, Vice-Chair, and Chairperson, I have been committed to ensuring that every member can fulfill the mission. My name is Crystal L. Higginbotham.
Candidate for National ChairLaKausha T. Simpson University of Florida Industrial/Systems Engineering Senior Candidate Simpson is a committed member of the UFNSBE chapter and has served two terms as Region III Finance Chair. In October 2006, she inaugurated the First Annual Alachua County Try-Math-A-Lon. She describes the experience as “the most rewarding NSBE event that I’ve participated in.” During her freshmen year of college, she secured a four-term co-op with Walt Disney. As a senior studying Industrial Engineering and Statistics at the University of Florida, she plans to obtain a professoriate in Industrial Engineering. The roles that Simpson executed in her youth inspired her to become a beacon for social activism. She has a strong passion for the progression of NSBE members and the future of our society. If elected as National Chair, LaKausha plans to focus on the following: Cultural & Community Awareness, Continuous Education & Career Access, and Leadership Development. Candidate for National ChairLayla E. Williams Colorado Technical University Project Management 1st Year Graduate Student Greetings Esteemed Members of NSBE, It has been an honor to serve as your 2007 National Convention Planning Committee Chairperson, and it’s with even greater pleasure to announce my candidacy for the position of National Chair of this great organization. As a Masters Candidate at Colorado Technical University studying Project Management, with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Wayne State University (Detroit, MI), I see a vision for the position of National Chair and NSBE. Realizing that "Our Time, Our Renaissance" has ushered in the awakening for us to focus on the health of our Society not as a whole, but as the individual members who make up the body of the largest student ran organization in the world. I hear the call! The destiny for NSBE today and tomorrow lies within every member to focus on "Becoming healthier Engineers that exhibit less selfishness and more selflessness”
Candidate for National Vice ChairStevenson A. Dunn, Jr. Polytechnic University Civil Engineering Junior Stevenson A. Dunn, Jr. is a dedicated member of the National Executive Board who aspires to continue onto a 2nd term by serving as the National Vice Chairperson. Dunn has developed a passion for the NSBE Mission that has afforded him great success as a leader. From PCI Chapter President moving onto Collegiate Chapter Vice President, Dunn has learned what it takes to serve NSBE’s membership. Furthering his commitment to the Society as Regional Chairperson, Dunn led his region to a record breaking year. Success as a NSBE Leader was the catalyst for his appointment to the Board of the National Urban Research Group in 2006 and his induction into the International Scholar Laureate Program’s Engineering Delegation in 2007. Candidate for National SecretaryLaura Marie Jenkins Clemson University Biosystems Engineering Junior Greetings NSBE! I am Laura Jenkins and I would like to serve as the National Secretary. I am a junior Biosystems Engineering major at Clemson University and have served at both the chapter and regional level. During my term as chapter secretary, I improved the format for meeting minutes and was able to effectively publicize chapter events. As regional secretary, I am working to move the main source of communication to our website. As the current chapter President, I encourage members to continuously reach for the sky. Under my direction, our membership has increased 247%; we held a conference in South Carolina for the first time, exceeded solicitation goals and conducted several academic and cultural awareness programs to increase our visibility. As NSBE grows, effective communication is imperative and, if elected, I shall work to eliminate the inefficiencies that exist while simultaneously transitioning the organization towards better methods of communicating.
Candidate for National SecretaryKari L. Jordan Michigan Technological University Mechanical Engineering 1st Year Graduate Student Greetings, I am pleased this year to finally run for a National Position! I began my affiliation with NSBE in 2001 as a general member of the Michigan Technological University Chapter. Since then I've served as Chapter Secretary, President and Chair Emeritus, Regional Secretary/Communications Zone Lead and Regional Charter Membership Chairperson, and am currently serving as 2007 National Convention Planning Committee Secretary and Promotions Team Lead. My platform is simple. Global communication and training are keys to sustaining a dynamic organization such as the National Society of Black Engineers. Without proper communication and providing extensive training to our members our organization will not be able to survive the technological advancements of today. As National Secretary I plan to train our six (6) Regional Secretaries in areas such as note taking, parliamentary procedure and strategic planning in order to run successful meetings/conferences. Thank you for this opportunity!
Candidate for National TreasurerChristina Diaz Cornell University Fiber Science 1st Year Graduate Student Greetings NSBE. I am Christina Diaz and I wish to serve as the next National Treasurer. I received my BS in Textile Engineering from North Carolina State University. At NCSU I served as chapter treasurer for three years. I brought the chapter out of a deficit and established financial stability. In 2005, I joined the Region 2 REB as the Assistant Treasurer and later that year became Regional Treasurer. I am currently in my second term as Region 2 Treasurer. During my tenure on the REB, I have helped the region avoid financial deficit despite two difficult years in terms of conference venues and attendance. As the next National Treasurer, I shall move NSBE forward financially in this Renaissance that we have embarked upon. In my term I will seek to prepare NSBE financially for international growth, diversify our revenue sources, and improve the financial operational efficiency.
Candidate for National Programs ChairTrisha Atkins University of Rochester Chemical Engineering 1st Year Graduate Student NSBE Family - Members are the heart of this organization and Programs are the Soul! When the members spoke out about programming – my zone listened and responded. Having sat in many positions on both chapter and regional boards, as Chapter rep, Tele-Communications and Media Chair as well as Vice-Chair; as Regional Zone and Business Diversity Chair, as well as Regional Programs Chair, I know the challenges and unique prospects faced by chapters and regions. As current National Programs chair, I am able to see the direction in which the organization is headed and am in the best position to aid in guiding this growth. Complex problems provide immense opportunity. Our organization is IN unprecedented territory as we achieve membership and financial milestones. If you desire to see the organization grow and continue to respond quickly, elect a leader who does not need to learn the direction headed – Elect Trisha Atkins!

As National Programs Chair I will work to develop programs that get people passionate about NSBE and its mission again. I believe in service leadership and will fully dedicate myself to the membership throughout my term, by giving them a stronger voice in program development.
