"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Stay Hungry. Stay foolish." Dynamism: Dispositional Learning Through IT • David Collett | Brandon Hoover International School Manila
Dynamism: Dispositional Learning Through IT • Enduring Understandings: • Information Technology is constantly evolving. • We must learn to be dynamic to adapt to our increasingly IT driven world.
Dispositions • Investigative • Creative • Curious • Collaborative • Evaluative • Self-directed “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish”
Google Interview Questions • Project Manager: How much should you charge to wash all the windows in Seattle? • Software Engineer: Why are manhole covers round? • Logistics: How would you go about designing a car for deaf people?
Answers • This is one of those questions where the trick is to come up with an easier answer than the one that's seemingly being called for. We'd say. "$10 per window.” • So it doesn't fall through the manhole (when the plane ordinarily flush with the plane of the street goes perpendicular to the street.) • Plug your ears and drive around for a while. It’s about the person, not about the car.
ISTE / NETS Standards • Demonstrate creativity and innovation • Communicate and collaborate • Conduct research and use information • Think critically, solve problems, and make decisions • Use technology effectively and productively
Old School vs Bold School • Bold schools are places of questions, not answers. When much of what we currently think is important for our students to know is just a few taps on a phone or a Google search away, our central mission can’t be to deliver and test for content mastery. • Instead, it must be to develop deep dispositions for learning by supporting sustained inquiry into both the content and context of whatever subject students are tackling. • http://www.districtadministration.com/article/are-you-old-school-or-bold-school
Collaboration in these times requires our students to be able to seek out and connect with learning partners, in the process perhaps navigating cultures, time zones, and technologies. Deeper Collaboration: It requires that they have a vetting process for those they come into contact with: Who is this person? What are her passions? What are her credentials? What can I learn from her?
Collaborative • http://bit.ly/w56p3P • You have 10 minutes to get as many answers as you can • Share solutions and how you got there • What dispositions did you use/strengthen?
Project Based Learning • Mimics real life collaboration • Student centered and driven • Inherently creative and investigative • Seven rules of 21st century learning: • http://bit.ly/xKe4jX
Differentiation of Choices • Related to a real world situation • Mindful of differentiated skill levels and interests • Open to creativity, but scaffolded for focused learning • Student driven
Handout • Brief overview of the handout • http://bit.ly/w2Bhbf • Please read the student reflection on the last page Photo by Coba: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coba/
Final Notes • Can you create this effect? • How would you figure it out? • Fastest student time: 4 minutes
