  2. Your summer projects were delightful.

  3. But there were some errors I found consistently. I kept a list.

  4. You are special.

  5. First, plagiarism. • Verbatim or not, if it’s not your research, it belongs to someone else, and they deserve credit. • Credit is awarded with an in-text citation (1 Halbrooks). • An in-text citation contains the first word from the works cited entry.

Be Aware of the Following: • Avoid contractions in a formal paper • Avoid using first person or first person plural in a formal paper • Avoid using second person in a formal paper • Avoid overusing the word “that” • “So” is not a transition word • Call it what it is: If it’s a novella, call it that

  10. Continued • Avoid over using the word “that.” • Avoid editorializing in a paper that is NOT a persuasive paper. • Avoid underlining. • Avoid using Wikipedia. • Avoid alternating tense. • Avoid talking about your essay in your essay.

  11. Grammar Issues • Capitalization in titles • Comma usage • Brackets • “Single ‘quotations’”

  12. Evidence • “Yeah? Married two weeks and got the eye? Maybe that is why Curley’s pants is full of ants” (Steinbeck 28). This shows Curley does not have the attention he needs from his wife. • **Be sure you set up your quotes in such a way they actually prove what you are saying**

  13. Structure • Introductions have a few elements • A hook • Introduce the broadest topic • What subject regarding that topic • The point you’re making about that topic (thesis)

  14. Structure: • Paragraph: • Topic sentence that says what you’re going to discuss in the paragraph • Some context • Some evidence • A concluding sentence that proves that information supports your thesis

  15. Structure: • Conclusion: • Restate Thesis • Reference your main points • Reference the examples • State why significant
