Events that led to Head Start • In 1964, the Federal Government asked a panel of child development experts to draw up a program to help communities overcome the handicaps of disadvantaged preschool children. The panel reports became “Project Head Start.”
Influences on Early Childhood Education • Head start has played a major role in focusing the attention of the Nation on the importance of early childhood development. • The program has led in efforts to improve the cognitive abilities of young children. Studies have indicated that Head Start children score higher that comparable non-Head Start children in preschool achievement tests.
