Communication Information • Daily Folders- Allows 2 way communication… • Transportation changes/notes must be placed here (including after school clubs). • Transportation changes made DURING the day must be called into office. • Money (cash/checks) must be in labeled envelope in folder. • Behavior sheet in back of folder… • Weekly-Student work is sent home weekly (usually Fridays) • Email & Texting- Email is the best way to get in touch with me! • Seesaw app-PLEASE download and sign up. Classroom Management Class Dojo & Treasure Box: Students will earn Dojo points based on good behavior. When they reach 15 points, they can choose a reward from the chart. Clips: Students can clip up/down for behavior during the day….they can earn a TON of dojo points for this! Weekly Behavior Sheet: Students will earn strikes for breaking classroom rules. Please sign and return by Monday. Fun Friday: Students who receive less than 3 strikes in a week will earn a FUN reward on Friday! *Natural Consequences & Positive Relationships*
Phonics • Benchmark Series (blends, digraphs, long vowel patterns), • Word Sorts and other activities • Making Words- decoding skills • Decodable Books
Reading • Shared Reading (Mini-lesson) Read orally, think-aloud, comprehension skills, model strategies (whole group with student participation) • Guided Reading: Direct instruction on skills/strategies to create student-sustained reading. Students will work on comprehension, vocabulary, retelling, and fluency skills. Red Folder • Center Time: Students will participate in focus lessons that teach comprehension, reading attack strategies, fluency and vocabulary. Students will rotate between meeting with a teacher, word work, read-to-self and technology (Raz-kids) each day spending about 15 minutes in each center.
Writing • Kemp’s School-wide focus this year • Handwriting- Zaner-Bloser Manuscript • Writer’s Workshop (Lucy Culkins) • Mini Lesson Teach grammar, language arts skills, writing skills • Writing Genres (narrative, informational, opinion)
Math “Ways to Make”(decomposing numbers) Students are expected to be completely fluent in adding to 10. Practice this daily in class and build to demonstrating mastery Math Workshop (Daily 3) -Standards based lesson, - Differentiated practice with manipulatives (small groups) -Emphasis is on understanding concepts and being able to explain reasoning.
Content Overview • Switches between science and social studies. • Students will participate in STEM days each quarter.
Grades and Rubric Style Report Card Can your child show consistent knowledge of the skill? • Mastery is expected by the end of the marking period. • No averaging • Pay close attention to homework and classwork. • Please use parent report card guide to know expectations for each 9 weeks. Will receive during parent conference. • Progress reports to all are sent home at 4 ½ mark. Academic Alerts sent if needed.
Grades and Rubric-Style Report Card • 3+ Exceeds Standards- applies and inferences beyond expectations • 3 Meets standards- consistently and independently • 2 Progressing toward meeting the standard • 1 Limited or minimum progress toward meeting the standard • Practice Work – stickers/smiley faces/checkmarks/comments • Graded Papers – 3+, 3, 2, 1 • Please be aware that standards are performance based. Children will be assessed in a variety of ways, which will include checklists, • rubrics, teacher observation and paper/pencil tasks.

ParentVue • Progress reports and report cards will be made available online through ParentVue. Each family registers for ONE ParentVue account which will show grades and report cards for all siblings. • 1st – 5th grade parents: If you have ever registered for ParentVue in the past, please login to confirm your information is still correct. https://parentvue.cobbk12.org/ • Kindergarten parents, new parents, and parents who have never registered: Please fill out the ParentVue Acceptable Use Policy & User Agreement, and return it to your teacher. You will receive an Activation Key Letter within the next couple of weeks which includes instructions on completing your ParentVue registration.

Homework Homework Packets will be sent home each week, DUE ON FRIDAY. Homework cover sheet will include weekly spelling words, Nightly Reading- 20 minutes each night will great benefit your child!! Battles with Homework…If you are battling with your child try this… First make sure your child understands how to do the homework. Then set a timer for 30 minutes and let your child work. If they have still not completed it during that 30 minutes, put it away ….please see me. Homework should not take more than 30 minutes to complete each night.
Absence and Dismissal Policy • Please send a note from home if there is an absence or change in dismissal. Must be in writing (not e-mail) • If you have a change of dismissal during the day, please call the office!!! Be prepared to fax photo id to ensure identity. Emails are no longer accepted. • If your child is out, please send an email or note on the day they return. You are only given 3 unexcused absences. • There will be no dismissal changes after 1:45 p.m. • Regular attendance and prompt arrival are vital to your child’s success in first grade.
Carpool Policy • PLEASE BE PATIENT when dropping off and picking up. We have many car riders. Please consider riding the bus! • Every student will be given a carpool number (even if they are not a regular car rider) Please help your child learn his or her number. • Number will be in 2 places: on car mirror and child’s backpack. • Students will be lined up and sent to cars using that number. • PLEASE do not remove this number from your child’s book bag. • If you do not have your car rider sign, you will need to go to the office and show ID to sign out your student. • *Family Car Pool Numbers*
From Kemp Administration Welcome Back! We are looking forward to a great year! Please help us ensure we are providing a safe learning environment for our students by following the procedures below: • Allow your student to ride the bus if possible. • Follow established car rider procedures (video on website). • Only drop students off after 7:15 a.m. • If you walk your student into the building in the mornings, please say your goodbyes in the lobby. Students should walk to class and eat breakfast on their own. • If your student is tardy (arrives after the 7:45 a.m. bell), visit the front office to sign them in. • Only enter the building at the front door. You must be “buzzed in” by the front office staff. Please do not try to enter at another door and ask a student or staff member to open the door.
Bus Policies • Children under the age of 9 must have an adult to meet them at the bus stop. Any child that does not have an adult to meet him/her will be brought back to the school. • All children under the age of 9 will have a bus tag attached to their book bags. This tag is an indicator for the bus driver that your child is under the age of 9. Tags will be coming soon. Please do not remove this tag!
Cafeteria Information • Menus are available on the Kemp website. • Prices • -Student $2.35 • -Adult $4.00 • Lunches may be pre-paid (encouraged) • Breakfast is served for $1.50 • Extras may be limited by parents only • Fast food is not allowed in the cafeteria. • Students eating breakfast must be in line by 7:45 • Birthday treats may be passed out in the cafeteria.
Welcome to KEMP ASP! • The AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (ASP) is open until 6:00 pm daily. • Every child must have a registration form completed and signed to stay in ASP each year. • $10 registration fee annually • $7 daily fee • Snacks are served each day- please send a snack with your child if he or she has a restricted diet or if he or she wants and additional snack. • PREPAID PROGRAM- Payment is required before a student is allowed to stay in ASP. If an online payment has been made within 24 hours of your child staying in ASP, please email confirmation of payment to dana.Johnson@cobbk12.org or Barbara.odom@cobbk12.org • There is a late charge of $1.00 per minute after 6:00 pm according to the school’s clock. • Students are allowed only 3 late pickups before being issues a list of local daycares that service Kemp students.
Clinic/Medication Policies • ALL medications must be sent to the clinic in the original container. • If your child needs an epi-pen for an allergy please send that in ASAP! • Please send a note with all meds • Cobb County Policy- students must be well for 24 hours before returning to school. (medicine free with no fever, vomiting, or diarrhea)
