Advanced • Defence to 1NT Doubled • & • 4th Suit Forcing
Defence to 1NT Doubled • If partner opens 1NT (12-14 HCP) • And opponents double • Showing 15+ HCP • If we are weak we need an escape • Because 1NT* will be a disaster • After the * our bids are natural • So any 2 level bid shows 5 of the suit and is a weak take out • But the strong hand becomes dummy
Some use exit transfers • Redouble (**) transfers to ‘s • ‘s transfers to ‘s • ‘s transfers to ‘s • ‘s transfers to ‘s • Opener then completes the transfer • But often we will not have a 5 card suit • There are other better methods • The one we will look at is called Helmic
Helmic Defence to 1NT* • This defence allows an escape with all weak hands except 4333 shape • The 4333 shape occurs in theory 10.54% • So, every 10th time partner opens 1NT and it is doubled you will have this shape hand • But we can allow for this shape as well using a ‘forcing’ pass
Defence to 1NT doubled • With 8+ HCP we are happy to play • We have at least half the HCP • So we would pass the double • With fewer than 8 HCP • We can re-double • Or bid a suit
Defence to 1NT doubled • If we re-double • It says • ‘I have a 5 card suit’ • If we bid a suit • It says • ‘I have 2 x 4 card suits’
Defence to 1NT doubled T 8 A Q • Partner opens 1NT • RHO doubles • What do we bid? • Pass • We have 8HCP • And a balance hand • Happy to play • Good luck partner! 7 3 K 7 6 3 J T 6
Defence to 1NT doubled 6 5 2 8 7 • Partner opens 1NT • RHO doubles • What do we bid? • ** • We have 4 HCP • 1NT* is a disaster • Partner will bid 2 • To find out which is the 5 card suit • And we bid 2 7 3 K 7 6 J T 6
With a 5 card suit • Re-double the penalty * • Opener relays by bidding 2 • Then bid the 5 card suit • Or Pass if it is ‘s • You must do this if you have a 5 card suit and fewer than 8 HCP • The weaker you are the more important it is to get out of NT
Defence to 1NT doubled 7 4 T 9 • Partner opens 1NT • RHO doubles • What do we bid? • 2 • We have 2 HCP • This bid says • I have 4 ‘s • And 4 of a higher suit 7 3 J 7 6 3 J T 6
With 2 x 4 card suits • We will be happy to find a 4/3 fit • Bid the lower suit • Opener Passes with 3 or more of the suit • With only 2 of the suit • Opener bids the next suit up • NOT a higher 4 card suit • Responder may only have 2 cards • Then responder bids the 2nd 4 card suit • Which is passed by opener • Or responder passes if the next suit is it
Defence to 1NT doubled 7 4 T 9 • Partner opens 1NT • RHO doubles • What do we bid? • Pass • We have 2 HCP • This bid says • I have either 4333 and weak • Or 8+ HCP • The Forcing Pass 3 7 3 J 7 6 J T 6
The Forcing Pass • Opener bids 1NT and RHO doubles • Responder passes • Opener MUST re-double • Responder then passes with 8+ HCP • Now you are playing in game! • Or bids 2 with 4333 shape and weak • Opener bids the longest suit • Which must be at least a 4/3 fit
Helmic defence to 1NT* • If opponents double your 1NT bid • They are strong • If you use the escape mechanism and they bid a suit • Pass and let them play • This is your best outcome • Never try to bid on • You will end up even deeper in the mire!
Helmic defence to 1NT* • If you use Helmic and find a fit • And opponents then double again • This is also for penalties • Do NOT try to find another fit • Or bid 2NT • Things can only get worse • And more painful! • They will double whatever you bid • The suit bid must be better than NT
Fourth Suit Forcing (FSF) • Technique to determine if a NT game is on • When your side bid all 4 suits • Last bid is above the 1 level • There is enough for game • e.g. 1 P 1 P • 2 P 2 • Why did responder not bid NT? • The last bid says: • ‘If you have stops in ‘s bid NT otherwise bid another suit.’
FSF K J • Partner opens 1 • You bid 2 • Partner bids 2 • You know there is enough for game • But if partner has no ‘s • NT could be dodgy • So bid 2 • Asking for stops 3 Q 5 J 7 6 7 6 A Q J
FSF • Only use this when you have enough for game • Partner must Alert • Normally played as forcing to game • Partner bids NT with a good stop (A or K) • Or 2 smaller stops (QJx or JTxx) • Very useful for avoiding bad NT contracts
FSF • 1 Exception • 1 P 1 P • 1 P 1 • The responder has a weak 2 suited hand and is trying to find a cheap way out • If responder had enough for game and wanted to find a NT contract • The FSF bid would be 2
