Annotations • Review an Annotated Essay: “The Conscience of a Nation” – FYW, p. 62-64 • In Groups: Categorize the annotations as specifically as possible

Rhetoric! • Rhetoric: The Art of speaking or writing effectively. • Aristotle says rhetoric is “the ability, in each particular case, to see the available means of persuasion.” He described main rhetorical strategies*: • Ethos: Speaker-perceived credibility or reputation of the speaker. Level of respect and honor given to the speaker by the audience. (FYW, pp. 69-70) *(Note: Not rhetorical choices.)
Rhetoric! (Part 2) • Pathos: Audience. Appeals to the audience’s emotions. (FYW, pp. 73-74) • Logos: Words. An appeal to logic. A demonstration of proof. (FYW, pp. 70-73) • Sample in FYW on pp. 574-577.
